Isn't Bobby Jones technically public? I've only ever been for work events though so I could be mistaken
It is.
River Pines, Echelon, Heritage has been decent at times but unsure lately.
Love river pines. Well kept, reasonably priced and just challenging enough
Also check out the Stone Mountain courses to get those Marriott points…
For the love of god do not go to Stone Mountain right now. It was the worst greens I’ve played on maybe ever, and they said yeah sorry it’s and here’s a rain check to come play again

Sugar, you aren’t from Atlanta are you?
Is this for your own personal enjoyment playing golf or is it for an event entertaining colleagues or clients?
The simplest rule of thumb in terms of entertaining “locals,” is that the best “public” golf course is a matter of interpretation, with one factor being the relative flexibility of the term “public.” For some private courses, knowing a person with a connection runs from “a given” to an easy acquaintance to strike up.
Thus, the “best” course is the course that gives you what you are seeking, be it a challenge, an in-town bolthole, white glove service & a clubhouse where deals are brokered, a Marriott points fest, a lovely, lonely vista, … or just a place to enjoy yourself where you don’t have to deal with pretension or membership.
You’ve received some excellent suggestions here.
Have you downloaded the “Discover Atlanta” app yet? It was a cool site & now a useful app w: great articles and up-to-date info that even this Atlanta native uses.
Here’s the BEST way to go about finding a truly public golf course in the Metro area and ensure that the golf course is described in detail, ranked in various categories, and, ultimately, is the best fit for your foray into this field, “foray,” as you’ll be astonished at the breadth of your options:
⛳️ Google “best public golf course Atlanta, Ga.”
⛳️ Follow the links to the Atlanta Magazine articles and the Discover Atlanta articles as well as the ubiquitous comparative chart some person or group has prepared.
⛳️ Follow up on the links provided to The City of Atlanta parks & services, DeKalb County Parks and services, and the State of Georgia’s link for parks.
⛳️ Check the Google & FB scores for each course & the primary reviews for each as well.
⛳️ Doing all the above should take you about 30 min. Maybe an hr if you spend a lot of time delving & bookmarking.
⛳️ Don’t neglect the opportunities provided to play at prestigious private courses through the annual “public” days (buy a ticket WAY in advance).
⛳️ Finally, consider how far you are willing to drive for the experience. Calloway Gardens has a long-held excellent reputation. Also, don’t miss out on the history and catered comfort of Sea Palms, a resort on St Simon’s Island, one of Georgia’s Golden Isles. At the latter, you’ll see age ranges from college fellows to the GOB geriatric set. At least I see them several times a year. The Sea Palms resort hotels are quite inexpensive if you shop wisely and the Island is a fabulous escape.
⛳️ Evergreen (Stone Mountain) has a lot going for it in almost every category. “We” simply don’t patronize it anymore ever since the State sold out the park management from State management to Silver Dollar, the management of Dollywood. 🤦🏻♀️

ITP - Bobby Jones (9 holes). OTP - cobblestone. Unless heritage has changed in the past year, it is a very slow course.
