Best: okay, thanks for the information
Worst: anything else
Agreed - don’t give them the satisfaction of getting emotional. Just be neutral, say okay, and don’t say thanks (i.e., thanks for what?! laying me off?). If you can be cool and keep your emotions in check for the short time you’re with them, you’ll be glad you did, and you will probably freak out your boss and HR (which is a good thing in this instance). Besides, they are not going to change their mind - it’s a done deal before they meet with you. So be like Clint Eastwood - cool, calm, badass. Go out with your head held high. (And yes, I’m speaking from personal experience, having been laid off a few times, including recently.)
At first I read this as “Best/worst thing to say while getting laid,” which would have very different answers.
