Blew a presentation at work, but everyone is saying it wasn’t a big deal and that it went great. I appreciate the niceties but also want to improve.

How do you ensure you’re getting honest feedback at the workplace?

Maybe they’re being honest ? If you do good work otherwise then one bad presentation is not a big deal indeed. Sometimes we’re our own worst critics and the dishonest feedback is coming from us (wish I could take my own advice …).

Sounds like that’s the general consensus, hoping that’s the case, at the very least I know what I feel I need to work on

Sometimes I get off demo’s that I think I flopped on and then I go back and listen to the recording and it doesn’t sound nearly as bad as I thought.

Just a different perspective that it might not have actually been as bad as you thought

like

I blew a presentation and they rolled me off the project

like

That’s an easy way to tell…geez no room for improvement

Why do you think you blew it? If you are feeling this way and are not just being overly critical then list the improvements that can be made and follow your own instincts. It is just a presentation so tempo, presenting fully developed ideas, professional context, visual narration, and messaging are your key areas for improvement.

We are our biggest critic, if there is anyone in particular you feel you can be honest with ask them on the side.

like

Pick a couple things you felt didn't go smoothly and ask for advice rather than feedback from someone more senior or that you really trust. Explain that you felt like [the beginning was stiff, or you didn't handle a question well, or whatever] and you want to improve for next time.

Then, once you've gone through that, you could ask if they noticed any other moments like that and if so whether they have any advice.

like

I’ll do that, hard to get feedback from broad questions like “how did that go” I’ll ask for comments on the flow of it, I felt it was rushed.

Was it your presentation skills or was it the content or was it your level of preparedness?

Yes.

Send an anonymous feedback survey, via Google forms and ask the hard questions. Just make sure you are ready for the responses.

The problem with Corporate. No one wants to teach / train / help others improve or tell them the truth about areas they need to improve on.

I don't know if you did poorly or not. Maybe you are being to hard on yourself, maybe you did poorly.

Can you find a work friend that can give you honest feedback?

I made a couple errors at a new job. An important document to be distributed had wrong information on it, which was proofread by 2 other people. Then a couple of typos in emails, the person micromanaging me told me to send out but I didn’t fix the errors. Failed to meet a deadline but completed 95%. I was written up over all this last week, fired this week. There’s a lot more to this but I think it’s because the DM doesn’t like me.
