Came back from my first tour of duty calling everyone "sir" and "ma'am," I think it's a good habit that shows respect for others regardless of their position in life.

I think it’s off-putting, personally.

I do that with everyone I meet, even before I left for the military. It's just a generally good habit to pick up.

Treating everyone the same regardless of their status in life is a testament to how not to play favorites with people.

I hate being called ma'am. It makes me feel old.

One thing I can say the army taught me is to respect authority

I agree with this and you get a great response from people when you are polite and respectful

Yes. It is respectful, I must say. But I sometimes notice people say it with a condescending tone.

I automatically call them sir/ma'am. And yes, getting a positive response from them is also a great feeling.

Originally from Italy, I've been out to anyone at my former jobs in Europe without ever worrying about the reactions of my coworkers. Now I'm Asia and just started a new job, but one of my colleagues (also an expat) made a very weird statement about gay people having more chances of developing cancers (?!?!?), so I feel a bit skeptical about talking about my private life... The problem is that anybody else seems to be so welcoming and open-minded, except for this one guy. Any advices?

DE&I is now a core leadership competency. If you are managing diverse talent, it’s important to understand what the term “privilege” means within a DE&I context so you can lead your team to higher levels of inclusivity+develop optimal strategies for solutioning around team issues/challenges. Everyone has some aspect of privilege depending upon the context. Privilege means the absence of obstacles/barriers, not necessarily the presence of perks. Though some would say *that* itself is a perk.
