Can anyone explain best practice for sick leave accrual in New York? My company is remote and as we are scaling we are moving to an HRIS and now see we may not be compliant. Any tips?

The minimum legal accrual in ny is 1 hour for every 30 hours worked (or 1 day for every six weeks assuming a 40 hr workday) but i think it is more common that sick leave is provided at once for each calendar year (must be a min of 40 hours if less than 100 employees, 56 if more than 100) it’s probably ethically the best practice and makes more sense bc people cant really choose when they get sick.

Something to consider, my company has unlimited sick leave and requires a doctors note if 3 or more days in a row. This was adopted bc of covid and quarantine policies but stuck around permanently since no one really abuses the policy.

Honestly, it's best to be generous with sick leave. I agree with unlimited sick leave (and the 3 day doctor note like RC1 mentioned) because you really can't control how often people get sick or for how long. When people feel like you really value them & their wellbeing, they're more apt to stick around.

Don't have employees in New York, Oregon, and Colorado. The state laws are prohibitive to good business practice. Hire remotely somewhere else.

My question is those currently in an HR role, would this move make sense to you?
