Hi all, recently in touch by Spotify recruiter for a Sec Engineer position for remote EU and was told that range was 60-80 out of base salary and equity. Had 2 years of security experience out of my 4 years. Was also told that there is no bonus scheme or no sign in bonus 😕 Not sure how I feel about this tbh.
What do you think?

$5k after taxes really isn’t a meaningful bonus - $25k when you’re later in life and have larger needs (house, kids, etc) is a big number.
If you like the job and don’t have plans to leave, then obviously bank. If you are on the fence it’s a judgement call, but I would still bank. If you take a new role you should be able to get some sort of signing bonus that would make you whole on the 5k
Cause 3 years is a long time. Things can change. The firm should have had incentives like $5k yr 1x , $10k year 2, $20k year 3. That way if you leave you wouldn’t be penalized.
EY3, agree 100%! I didn’t bank mine last year and left a couple of months ago. 3 yers is just too long, a lot can happen in this time frame.
Question 1: do you plan to stay till manager?
If yes, bank your bonus.
If no, don’t.
Economy wouldn’t affect anything in this equation to me except whether or not you plan to stay til manager. I guess if you’re risk adverse, you will more likely stay until manager, so bank your bonus.
Understood but the idea behind it was to get people to stay through to Manager (and hopefully longer). So we won’t do the year by year payout but what $ amount gets you there ? $30K, $35K?
True - but you’re also making a pretty good argument in favor of banking. Bank your bonus and decide to leave - great - you get a nice raise that quickly more than covers the 3k after taxes you didn’t get when you banked. Bank and settle into your elevated role / not have an interesting enough role come up in the next few years to lure you away - great - you get a nice 15k post tax and you get the manager title. Don’t bank and nothing good enough to leave comes along or you come to appreciate that staying longer term is very likely to significantly increase your lifetime earnings potential on average (whether making partner or not) vs leaving as a young senior - you’re going to be an extremely bitter M1
With the time value of money the 25k is 20k. So compare 5k now to 20k and the diff is 15k. Banking you bonus is like getting a 5k a year raise you don't get for 3 years. Would you lock yourself in for only a 5k raise...
I mean if you have your CPA and are on a good stable team. i can see that. But if not that too many variables and $5k now would be much better.
