Do you mean at an ad agency? Or in a sales organization (we have both in this bowl and the answers will vary significantly)
Tell us EXACTLY what type of AE role you are thinking of and maybe we can help.
It’s basically a fancy word for sales. It’s my wife’s position. She’s working a a start up now but her last job was wholesale food sales (she specialized in fine dining). She did super well but some other ppl in her office make 500k a year, selling vegetables.
Varies greatly by industry- which one?
An account executive is really just a sales role with minimal management so they really only look for outside sales experience.
AEs exist outside of sales too, so it would vary by industry.
Ad agency: 6 months? Seriously, it's the entry level. Not that hard. Ok, maybe associate and AAE first..
An Account Executive or Account Manager manages a connection with a corporate customer. If this individual makes a lot of money, it is most likely because he is in charge of a high-profile account that brings in a lot of money. For example, the AE for the J&J account would be someone at Google who oversees Johnson&Johnson's online marketing budget. The position has nothing to do with computer science.
Did someone say it had anything to do with CS?
I'm still trying to figure it out lol! I think it goes back to upselling and demonstrating value for clients. How much more can you sell? And can you do it in a way where clients like it and aren't annoyed by you being too pushy?
Based on the conversations I've had with my AE and others around the company, you're looking at 2, maybe 3, years to become an AE at an ad agency.
