When I moved into my apartment last year, her demeanor changed and she became so much more skittish than ever before. She had never been keen on strangers, but then she got to where she always hid deep in the closet and wasn’t even cuddling with me much. The slightest noise or movement would cause her to bolt. The Prozac helped a very tiny bit where she’d at least come hang out on a dining room chair instead of hiding in the closet, but still felt “stranger danger” every time my partner came over (which was every other day, as we switched off being at each others’ place every day), and still super skittish… Which is why I asked the vet if we could try something else. I kinda wish I could keep her on the gabapentin because she’s back to her old self now but even without the fear of strangers! The pest control guy came last week, and she went right up to him and let him pet her! I was like, “WOW, who is this cat?!” lol
Do any of you have experience with your kitty being on gabapentin as a long term/maintenance med?
Thank you for your insight - I will do that! The vet had previously mentioned perhaps moving her to Xanax, but then realized that would logistically be rough given that they’re a mobile vet operation and the Xanax Rx has to be a paper one you bring to the pharmacy lol
(Not sure if that’s a Texas thing or federal?)
Omgsh look at this little baby. Curious how you got her to take those meds though. I have allergy pills for one of my cats and cannot get her to take them. If I put them in food or a treat she will literally just eat around the pill! She is too smart for her own good.
The gabapentin is in capsules, so I pop open the capsule and sprinkle it into her wet food and mix it in.
I have cat sitting clients who take pills that come in tablet form though; for those, I put the tablet on a plate or saucer, and press down hard with the back of a spoon. It cracks and then I keep smooshing the larger bits until it’s more of a powder; then I mix that into their wet food.
