These stories always leave me mixed. It's a combination of anger for berating the elderly followed by a "you should have known better." Had a customer that got scammed out of 8k according to her daughter. The caller originally called in to discuss a huge bill with lots of calls to Jamaica. While we worked towards getting those taken care of, the police couldn't do anything about the 8k because they claimed she gave her money away willingly. This scam was basically send them several thousands and they'll send her millions in return.
I see this way too much lately. I can't speak for other banks, but I can tell you that all the cases like this that I've had to forward to our Disputes team have had their claims denied. They don't get that money back.
Yeah, they don't get any of that back because they willingly hand over the merchandise /money that they purchased themselves. It would be a different story if the scammer got a hold of their credit card info and went out to make purchases that were not authorized.
My grandad got a call - Microsoft wanting to update something or other so he gave them all his details etc. The second he put the phone down it clicked that it wasn't legit and quickly rang the bank etc to freeze all his accounts. He got really lucky he didn't lose anything but he was at a massive risk with all his details given out. It's probably also worth teaching that Microsoft/Apple, etc, will never call you. They might ask you to call them, but there will be some form of prior communication.
It hit my small store, and we almost never see this kind of fraud. The fraudsters have somehow gotten information on our best and oldest (in age) customers with the largest credit limits and have them put thousands in gift cards. Breaks my heart
