My locality is slightly bigger-350k, and I work maybe two or three weekends a year and not for the whole weekend—just a few hours. At my busiest I work 45-48 hours per week, but most weeks it’s straight 40 hours. I also can take those hours at comp time any time in the next year, so I take a decent amount of vacation—2 one week trips and then a full week over the holidays, plus one or two days here and there. A lot of the time I’m working over 40 hours a week is ahead of time off.
It would really depend on the boss. In an office that small it may be that the work was just slightly too high for 1 FTE attorney, so you may get great balance— but it may also be that you end up with a boss who “delegates” 2 attorneys work onto the deputy. In general government work is a much better work-life balance, but small firms are small firms- so do some culture/boss research, for sure!
