Got an offer for moving to a boutique and was excited until I got the benefit info. Currently at $140, DTO, 12 holidays, high chance of decent bonus. New role is $160k, 24 days PTO, 8 holidays, only utilization bonus but good size.
The change is PTO/holidays is a huge deal for me but not sure if the salary makes up for it. They aren't budging on anything which to me is not a good sign. Really torn on what to do
bonus will be the same or only a couple thousand less. Not worth putting in the extra 300-400 extra hours a year for the incremental. System is not set up to reward hard workers (I am not saying people working 90% utilization aren't working hard, just that +110% isn't getting compensated for the additional hours)
Wish we could just bank it for lean year
Agreed 100%. Politics is key
That's why there's a target. They don't tell you to go above the target.
@OP sounds like you were the dork in college that had a 98% in a class going into finals and studied for days to get an A on the final rather than getting a C or D and finishing with a 94% in the class which are both A's. 💦💦💦
Take a look at the swagger most partners have, I guarantee you they weren't getting 120% util and neglecting their life when younger
Agreed. The marginal amount of work required to be 5 rated is so much more compared to a 4 rating. Money difference is negligible. I been trying to give zero fucks. But it's hard to do so for some people.
Checked today, 114%. Not proud of it either as I do feel burned out. Will be actively trying to get that down next performance year.
...FYI if you have too high of utilization / hours over standard you'll get negative feedback at your Career Outlook discussion about work life balance
Also if you have above 100% util and neglect to take your PTO you are just giving the firm free labor
Hit your utilization and hours over standard target. Going much over that really doesn't pay off. Spend the rest of that time kissing ass instead.
Sometimes over 100% could be perceived as a burnout risk - working too hard and possibly looking to leave due to burnout.
Yep. Take some PTO with all that extra util
I've been at 105-110% for several years and always been praised for that.
Ha, exactly...the person with 90% utilization still receives a 1 rating, gets the same bonus, and same base pay increase
Are you really putting in over 100% ?
I agree with EY1. I have been trying to cut back, but the shit keeps hitting the fan and then these people send CYA emails pointing out when I dropped the ball when I am really trying to manage burn out.
"Praised"? Aww so cute.
D1, 1s are given to kiss asses, high performers, those with high util., etc.
I've always gotten top ratings but can't say that was for >100% utilization vs the politicking I absolutely do. But was just making the point that it's definitely not frowned upon to work hard...
