So what’s the challenge?
Took forever to write this out. Rest of post is now in the comments :) any help appreciated
You should certainly consider reapplying but you have to be exceptional and offer something unique beyond a generalist skill set to get a US job offer in the current climate. Down the road, assuming you show career progression, and if you’re as good as say you are, it can be easier to find jobs. There are a lot of talented people. Even if you graduated top of your class people won’t notice much during the interview other than passing a “bar”. Once you are employed people don’t care where you went to school or what your grades were. Only your performance matters.
In the meantime, focus on your marriage. You give the impression it’s been rushed.
(...) experience at F100 and consulting firms. Knew I wanted to move to US for her and only applied to US positions for first job. Interview invite from all MBB, but from the respective European office despite application filed for US. I tried to switch application over but no luck (no interest/non-target school/did not want to sponsor H1B). I interviewed with all McK and Bain for practice of what would come at me in U.S., and ended up getting one offer. Then went to US to interview with the only firm that was interested and willing to sponsor. Got the job! I’m not unhappy with the firm, but I feel going for a boutique with no brand recognition will bite me in the neck. Whilst folks are smart, I do feel like I have a leg up and don’t feel as challenged as I wish I was. Compensation is also sub-par and I feel they may get in financial trouble from CV-19 downturn.
We have recently gotten married, and one incentive to have an early wedding was for me to be in a stable visa situation. Took away some of the romance, but we’ll make up for it eventually.
Have I undersold myself given the visa situation? I graduated top of class, have great experience, a previous offer, and an interesting story. Is it time to reapply to MBB now that I won’t need sponsoring? Should I wait it out and gain more experience in boutique? How hard will the pivot be coming from European school?
In all honesty we’re not going to know what your undergrad was unless it was Oxbridge. UCL, ICL, HEC, LSE are all great schools but they don’r have the same punch on a resume from a US perspective. Applying within a year or two since graduating is still going to keep you in the same bucket as new hires...
Successful pre-MBA hires typically equip themselves with two things, especially if it’s difficult for them to lean on resources and reputation of their undergrad: 1. Strong (current) post-UG job with high relevance and impact. 2. Strong referral (usually manager or above, but given current economy I’d shoot for partner level).
