A stretch candidate might bring fresh perspective, but if the team is already overwhelmed or in a high-pressure phase, I lean toward someone who can plug in quickly. Depends a lot on what the team needs right now.
i always go for the person that brings the most unique set of skills or background. Someone that complements the team.
I would go with the one who fits more seamlessly into the team. It is so important to have strong team dynamics, but I'd recommend going with your gut. Not sure if the rest of your team has had a chance to meet the candidate and ask them questions (one call with candidate, you, and rest of team with a roundtable Q&A), but I found this to very valuable despite hating the concept initially.
I'd lean toward the team...but I'd also happily drop an underperformer to replace them with the second candidate if all signs point to yes.
I trust my gut
I go with my gut! Had the same situation recently and honestly just had to go with my gut. So far so good.
Why does the one fit “more seamlessly”? How do you know that? And do you think the advertising program is in a state of maturity or growing to that point?
My preference is the person that stretches the team because they can get the team to the next level when needed.
That largely depends on priorities and requirements for now and into the future, if efficiency RIGHT NOW is a key requirement definitely the candidate who fits into the team as it is currently configured is the way to go. If rapid transition and innovation IN FUTURE PROJECTS is more important, then perhaps the candidate who will somewhat disrupt the status quo is a better way to go. It depends on requirements.
