Yes I have, and yes it did. I'm no longer afraid to walk out of an interview and leave everyone in the building saying, "Holy shit. No way are we hiring that guy." Because the one time I held back a little, to get into a shop a lot of people want to work at, I ended up hating it.
I'm there right now! Only its not an agency, its a well known company with a generally positive reputation. I left agency life for what seemed like a dream company and have been miserable since week 2. I've just decided I definitely need to get out (I'm 6 months in), and am being very particular about what I'm looking for because of this experience.
The day I started, I wasn't introduced to over half the agency. Later on, I leaned towards my AD and asked why. That's when I learned it was another agency sharing the space.
Yes and yes. The first week I was in panic mode. IMO it’s poor on the recruiter to hire someone who’s not a good fit.
Yup, picked up and moved to a new city without ever having been there before (dumb move). The cd that hired me left shortly after I got there, and most people at that agency looked at me like an alien (I'm a person of color and the town was really white).
Yes and yes. Now I always ask to walk around and I ask everyone both what keeps them coming in every day AND what they don't like or would change.
Happened to me. Definitely changed how I view things and what I look for in an agency. I knew it was risk/reward going in. But I didn't expect the co-ECD, the good cop who hired me, to quit my first week. Or the agency to close 9 months later. I don't regret it- it's all a lesson for next time.
Yes. I always ask if co workers hangout with each other outside work hours. Usually a good indication that the environment is positive and that the people actually like each other. If people are dying to get outta the office everyday that's a huge red flag
Yep I'm super picky now. I have no problem turning things down if I don't feel 100% in it.
Yes. 360i. Knew it was a mistake within 5 min.
Knew it was a mistake at my last agency within the first week. Got let go eventually - combo of wrong fit and budget cuts. Definitely taught me to trust my gut during the job hunt. Just started a new gig and went in knowing more about the things I will and won't settle for.
