This keeps me up at night. I know it’s not the smart thing to do if we want to see grandparents in the near future, but we are at the end of our rope.
SF and my daughter is 3. As long as my husband or I are working from home, we will keep our daughter home. We expect her to be home through mid June at least. I’m supposed to go back to work early June, but am also pregnant and have already worked out with my boss that I would come in a few weeks after others to see how it goes and she will be home with me then too. So my guess is we will keep her home for an additional 2 weeks at least while I sort out my work situation. I’d rather not rush back.
I have 4-yo twins and I’m sending them back as soon as I can. (I’m not in a hotspot.)
My reasoning: I don’t think this thing is going away anytime soon. As in, I think it will still be around in 2 years. I also don’t see it trending down. The numbers keep going up. I don’t see how containment/contact tracing will work at this point given the numbers infected and the fact that so many are asymptomatic or have such mild symptoms they don’t notice them.
So with that in mind, I don’t see any point in waiting.
That’s what I think. Just not sure what we’re waiting for. Some people say they’re waiting through the “second wave” but they say it as though that will be the last wave. I don’t think it will be. If you research vaccine dev it would be a miracle if I’m getting a shot by a April 2022. There will be many “waves” after this one. If people want to close themselves in for 2-4 years that’s fine but I can’t go that long.
In NYC, a 2 year old and #2 due in 8 weeks. Struggling with this decision every day. Our daycare wants to reopen May 18 but we need to prioritize staying healthy for the birth. Have discussed keeping our son home until July and maybe longer.
They’ve been open at partial capacity the whole time for essential workers (and a few others) so It May be a different decision for them vs daycares that closed completely.
Chicago suburb. We’re closed till June. My toddler is seriously going stir crazy - there’s just no way to keep him as stimulated as they do. Grandma is in our house so that’s my big worry about sending him back but I’m also worried he’s getting f-ed up. Will probably put him back in daycare when they reopen - they’re still open for essential worker kids and aren’t letting parents in for drop off and taking the kids temps. Hoping that continues when they open for all the kids. That and the small class size mandated for toddlers makes me a bit calmer about it all.
I’ve been thinking about this nonstop. But I just found out today my sons daycare, which I LOVE, may be closing permanently. I still can’t believe this is all real life.
Omg due to this or were they planning on closing before? So crazy how many businesses aren’t liquid. I’m so sorry.
I’m hoping to send my daughter for a day maybe two a week when they open for her mental health (she’s 4 & in NYC). It’s been so hard for her to be alone with just me (single mom). She needs the interaction badly... it breaks my heart to see how confused and sad she is.
However, before I do that I’m planning to speak with the regional director of the daycare about policies and procedures for sanitization standards ... specifically if they are bringing in a UV sterilization cleaning service regularly for air and surface cleaning.
We are in a suburb of Chicago. I have no idea what to do either. Plus, I'm expecting baby #2 soon as well and there is no way I can take care of a newborn and a toddler in the first few weeks.
Unlikely. Am in northern NJ and company already said that WFH will fine even when office reopens if childcare needs conflict with being in the office.
My husband doesn’t want to, but I do.
We’re in northern NJ
BOS, 4yo & 2yo. Daycare won’t open until at least July here. But, I was laid off in April, so it all depends on when I can find a FT position again. Right now I’m just freelancing a few hrs here and there. But, we’ve already had the conversations about bringing someone in PT if I find a gig. No right answers, this is hard.
NYC, no. Probably going to hold off at least 3-4 weeks and see how things go.
3 year old
If mine opens in May, we're going to wait til June to start them again. 2yo and 4yo. NJ.
Totally depends on when they open and what’s happening with COVID.
My daughter is 4 years old and I have 9 and 11 year old boys at home. I am sending my daughter back when daycare opens. She has asked about going back for a month straight. We are in Oregon and we really didn’t have a major hot spots. Her daycare has strict policies in place before COVID-19 and they have layered on even more. Our agency is staying WFM a little longer, but I am in client development. Pitching/working is so hard with a little one coming in and out. My husband is in the military so he isn’t fully WFH. Looking for a college kid (athlete) to help keep the boys busy this summer.
https://emilyoster.substack.com/p/can-kids-transmit-the-virus This is reassuring. Will be good to know what happens in the Scandinavian countries that have started school back up
Our Atlanta daycare opened Monday and this week is free. But still no way I’d send my 4 year old. I’d be so on edge about germs.
Virginia. Kids 6 and 3. Not sure when we will go back because my husband is immunocompromised. I also was just laid off, so not sure which side is up! Hoping to find some freelance work. Definitely don’t think we will be sending our kids back to school this year.
Nyc suburb, not right away. Need to see how things go and what policies are.
