Remember when everyone here is always like Delta is sooooo good, well all US airlines suck hard
I think I know PwC 1... if so, dude was lobbying at the airport for 12 hours while I gave up and retreated to the hotel
Communication so passengers could have made better decisions. My 845pm kept gradually moving in 15 minute increment delays. The reason kept changing, first it was we are 1 FA short, then we are going to leave in 15mins, then we didn't have our pilots, then we got new pilots on the way, they are almost here just wait 15 more minutes, they are here we will board in 15 mins, 1 hour of nothing, then random dude comes out and says these pilots are exhausted and can't fly tonight, not sure if we are getting new ones, more nothing, then a new gate agents tells us at 330am we are cancelling and to get into the at least 4 hour long line behind us to be rebooked. People were cursing and crying. All hotels in the immediate area were booking. Had to get a hotel 20+ miles away. If they had communicated better maybe I'd be typing this on at least 6 hours of sleep instead of 2. Also my rebooked flight is at 6pm. So to address your question C1 - a lot of sh*t
Also forgot the app just stopped working
They can blame it on weather but my plane was there too they had two crews expire and then the pilot expire and didn't cancel until midnight. Call and nicely state that - you'll get your miles. However, I just wanted to get from A to B. Really they need to calculate for these things and release people earlier. 10 hours in the airport just to be cancelled is brutal
You for sure don't know me. Dude isn't a dude. Thanks though!
My flight was delayed 5hrs yesterday not even due to weather. Had plane food pilots but no crew (this was weather, I'll give them that). Then they had the wrong manifest, user error. Then they had too much fuel, user error. Then someone got sick as we were pulling and both blood pressure kits didn't work, full user error. Fuck delta
The IT issues were 100% Delta's fault. Need to be prepared for weather issues.
AA is worse
The FAR's (Federal Air Regulations) Part 121 which all airlines operate under require that there be two crew members in the cockpit at all times. That is why one FA enters the cockpit while a pilot takes a bio break.
In addition, the FAR's require one Flight Attendant on board for every 50 seats of capacity (not filled seats) or fraction thereof.
So, there must be two pilots and the appropriate number of FA's on every flight. Insofar as pilots are in fact trained on the same safety and evac procedures as the FA's, they can not cross serve during the same flight and union rules prohibit anyone other than the appropriately trained and qualified crewmember from serving in any other capacity.
Yes. That's what i gathered from my 4 hours chatting with the pilots. Just seemed silly that there aren't provisions in the contracts for extenuating circumstances. We had 4 pilots and 2 flight attendants that were legal. Delta couldn't locate 3rd flight attendant for 6 hours. It is too bad two of the extra pilots weren't able to fill in due to regs. We weren't the only flight in a similar situation. Interestingly, even if they only had 1 paid passenger they would have needed 3 flight attendants.
How would you have handled the same situation given the same constraints?
I'm going to say that while they have improvements that need to be made, I'm still thankful that I got home last night and they made an effort to do it before the pilots timed out
ATL is a huge shit show. Planes and captains ready to go, but everyone is fighting for flight attendants. According to a captain their flight attendant rescheduling system is completely broken.
Irregular Ops happen. The issues they are having go directly to "concentration risk". They have all their eggs in ATL. When ATL goes down, the entire airline is on its ass.
Given it should be no surprise that ATL gets thunderstorms, tornadoes and could potentially even be in the path of a hurricane that by the time its gets there is still a strong tropical storm, DL needs to de-risk. Reopen the DFW hub or build another hub somewhere. They also need to isolate equipment and crew to each hub. This is just stupid.
Waited over 6 hours for the third flight attendant to get here in ATL. I asked the pilots if they could play that role in a situation like this. They said they gladly would, but can't. I can't see a reason why a pilot couldn't be cross trained, obviously the other way around wouldn't be a good idea.
There have to be two pilots at all times. Any other duties would not allow them to fulfill that duty. It sucks. I'm sorry you are dealing with this. Good luck!
Oh I get it. In this situation I have 2 extra pilots that are still legal. If they could be cross trained there would be more flexibility in extreme situations.
