Well the obvious is that at the portco, you are more hands on and part of the ELT. I’m at a portco and report to the CEO and operating partners at the fund. At the portco you have more leverage to implement change and see results through.
The fund roles are more “prestigious”, work closely with deal teams, and do pay more but they are very hard to get vs portco roles and at some funds upward promotion can be tough with small teams. At the fund you are working across ~3 portcos and at a layer removed from the actual action.
Sure send me a DM
Also prepare to fight an uphill battle trying to “dictate from above” at the fund level. Without the right credibility, people will dismiss much of what you say and also push to have you less involved in decisions. If you haven’t held prior leadership roles, their argument will be “how would you know if you’re not in the weeds day to day?”. For junior to mid-levels, it’s honestly easier to make an impact and prove your worth working in the portco even if it may be less prestigious (no one senior at the fund actually cares, you’re still a peon)
I came in at M level for a somewhat large Portco. Hoping it’s a good stepping stone into bigger things. Would love to chat with folks on their thoughts
