Dilemma. Should I:
1. Stay put: great agency name, big fun clients, lower pay, no promotion in sight for at least a year.

2. Jump: senior title, $40K raise, agency is okay but not top-tier, clients are meh for now but could rotate onto better ones after a few months.

40k on 80 is not 40k on 100 not 40k on 120. You mentioned senior so I'm guessing you're a mid level. If you're mid on 70k, I'd take it. If your mid on a 100k, lots of things to think about before jumping ship. One thing I always go back to: it's not the next move, but the move after that move.

likesmarthelpful

This is great advice, "it's not the next move, but the move after the move." I kinda see this new opportunity as that, transitional that leads to something better. If I do then jump ship I already have a Senior title. Just hoping good shops won't see this part of my journey as a "downgrade" and not worth considering, you know? I'm maybe overthinking. In the end it is the book that counts.

like

In the end, it’s all about the money. 💰

like

Your book is the most important thing, if money isn’t an issue right now. Because, it’s a lot easier to from a great shop to a great shop than it is to go from a mid to a great one. That will get you a better book in a long run and more money.

Also, don’t make a jump based on potential. Agencies like a promise a lot to get you in the door. But the reality is that a lot of things can change. They can lose clients, budgets can change, people who made the promises can leave, and you might end up never touching the better opportunities.

The other thing to remember, what makes ok shops creative is not just the creative department. It’s the team surrounding them. The account and strat teams.

In more creative shops, the remit is clear. So you’re able to get better work done because you’re more likely to be all rowing in the same direction.

At an ok shop, you’re more likely to have to deal more with the politics of pushing the work through. Because people around you won’t have the same mindset.

Not that it can’t happen. It’s just harder to get better work through.

likehelpful

Do you think you can get one good thing out of the new place to add to your book? If so, take it. Then bounce again if you don’t like it.

like

There would be one, yes. And, kinda where my thinking is headed. More so if I do bounce I already have the Senior title. I'm lucky that I don't necessarily need the extra money right now, just worried it looks "bad" as a career journey too, that I downgraded from a good name agency to an okay one? Does that matter these days as a mid/senior?

This is tough. Do you need the money? Or do you need the work. Gotta ask yourself those questions. Money isn’t everything until it is.

Do you have a family you need to support where the 40k would help? Or can you keep living off your current salary. If it were me, I’d stick to a place I love with fun work over money… but again depends on where you are in life.

likehelpful

In this economy? Take the money.

like

*WHEN they do layoffs.

like

Way too early to chase money. If you have the luxury of staying with the better agency, do it. At this stage in your career you have to rely on other people to fix the major issues that plague the work. That feels risky.

likehelpful

Yep. Easy to torpedo your career this early in the game. Also, follow the people. It’s all about who you’d be working for and what they’ve consistently done.

like

Make as much as you can as quickly as you can so you can get out as soon as you can. Your book won’t matter when you get made redundant (which you will regardless if you stay or leave) and find yourself competing with thousands of other younger, hungrier, more talented people than you.

The industry does not care about you. Squeeze as much out of it as you can and then go open a bar on a beach.

like

Same.

…wait.

You gotta jump. Always jump.

like

Jump. Make money climb. Keep networking. Never know where your career will head or what merger will change the cool agency into a boring one.

like

Don’t worry about the name on the door being ‘less than’ or perceived as a downgrade. Grey was the ‘worst’ place to go then Tor came in and changed everything. If you can get a bookworthy piece out of the new place, leave. Take the money. It’s true the industry doesn’t care about you.

like

In this economy I would jump in a heartbeat for $40k. I love the work that I do but it’s hard to ride with that knowing that I’m feeling set back in life because of money

like

Stay put.
Best advice ever given to me is “the money and titles will come. Go where the work is. Like the fun, worthwhile, creative-led work is. The rest of the shit will come before you know it, and you’ll be much happier when it does”

A year isn’t that long of a time to wait for everyday tranquility vs take the money now and do worse work because your unhappy (but unhappy WITH a title) :/

like

jump ship and keep networking. left a reputable agency for a title and pay bump at a mid tier. got poached from the mid tier a year in for a lateral move and another pay bump at another top agency.

wasn’t my plan at all but prioritized myself when opportunity presented itself, especially after 4+ years of patience at the first agency that kept me stagnant growth & compensation wise. 🤷‍♂️

TL:DR - having experience and a strong portfolio at a top agency once can be enough leverage should you do a stint at a less notable company.

like

If it’s all about the money, start your own agency. Unlimited earning potential. If not, sounds like you value the vibe, and “big fun clients” can provide that for sure.

New agency has hypotheticals. Might be risky. How’s the team?

Hello Everyone,

I have 4.3 YOE currently and I was offered Engr II - Full Stack position in VDSI. But after doing some research it seems Engr II is usually for YOE between 2 and 4. Is this correct? Will there be a problem for me if I take up this position with my YOE?
Since I am a lateral entry, I think promotion to Engr III also would take a lot of time.

Also can you please let me know the current designation hierarchy in VDSI?

Anyone have advice for advancing in your current role? My co-worker was hired in at manager level but somehow “proved” he was actually doing director level work and got a title promotion and salary increase in less than a year. I also went above and beyond my job as well (covering for him for a month while he was away on paternity leave) while taking on other projects outside of my job title and got zip—no raise or recognition. Any advice would be appreciated!

I was working vey hard and dedicated for past two years. But instead of giving a good raise, thay gave me a Position. I do really love this position and my work. But because of the poor salary, I don't know how much longer I'll be working here.

My company has given me a promotion without a raise. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Little background:

Asked for promotion in late 2020 - was required to skill up, after skilling up, asked again about when I'll be promoted and was denied because there is no "vacancy" for it.
Got my annual hike in Oct 2021 without the promotion. I asked HR last week again and got a random announcement email saying my promotion is w.e.f Oct 2021. ( and no raise for the newly promoted role).

Currently an M&A Tax A2 (HCOL) at KPMG, just received offer from Deloitte (same group, same city) as S1 with 6.5% raise. Raise is obviously too low; not sure what is typical salary increase from A2>S1. What would be a good counter? Should it be equal to typical raise or even higher?

Have an offer from a dream company but I'll need to go in at a lower level. Knowing that I can bring a lot of value to the company (read- I know my worth), I negotiated with the hiring manager to have a level/comp review 6 months after employment. If I hit all my goals (ie, prove myself) within that time frame, I'll get a promotion and salary adjustment.
QUESTIONS:
Should this be in writing in the offer letter?
How detailed should it be? I assume I won't know what goals to set till I start...
