Directors/MDs that are not on the partner track, help me understand how that works? Why and when did you decide to go that route vs leave vs try to make partner? Pros/cons? What’s the salary like?

I chose ED because of my health issues. I dont want to dedicate my life to the firm. The pay is high enough to not consider industry. Im happy being an ED given my health and family situation

like

What I like about being ED, is that the partners are not competitive with me. They help me out, they guide and mentor me and they find work while I deliver for them.

I was asked to move for a client (“partner making opportunities”) a couple times and was not willing to let my life be dictated by career. I am now an MD and am happy with my pay and quality of life. Pay will never be partner grade and I will never have the same “clout”, and my voice will never be as meaningful as having the “partner” title which is hard on the ego but my life is very good. I would take this track all over again.

That said, if you can, go for partner. Earnings potential is much greater.

EY 1 that’s a great point. As someone who wants to stay in public practice, but not necessarily be partner that is very intriguing to me

I’m too risk adverse to buy into a firm. That being said, you will always be reminded you are a second class citizen.

Is it a fail of character leaving biglaw? I want to leave, but despite the constant stress and suffering, I can’t avoid feeling like it’s my fault or that maybe I’m over exaggerating how I feel. All my colleagues feel ridiculously happy, I’m the grinch one that’s never enjoying the grind (but the grind is hard and competitive, very competitive) :( any thoughts? Is there future after quitting biglaw so young?

Just accepted an offer with a psych startup. Not exactly the offer I was hoping for as I’m taking a slight pay cut ($73/hr) and it’s a 1099 position. I keep getting stuck on the 1099 piece because I’ll be working 40 hrs/wk, but have been told I’m not eligible to be a W2 employee. Needless to say, no benefits whatsoever. They don’t even provide a computer or any other remote equipment for the completely remote position. Am I making a mistake? Also, can anyone chime in about being a 1099 employee?

Currently a first year staff in Risk Advisory in a Mid-Tier Firm hoping to move to Big 4 for either Risk or Cyber. When would be the most appropriate time to make the change? I heard that Senior Staff in mid-tier would most likely be hired as an “Experienced Hire” in Big 4. So would it be smarter to make the move now as a first year staff since I’ll be considered Experienced Hire anyway?
