I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Sometimes after you “win” you still don’t fully know what you won. True scale/scope etc isn’t truly revealed until post “win”
Sometimes … there are long transition periods with a lot of work still done by legacy agencies for up to one year, depending
Sometimes .. winning ends up just meaning you won the right to now one by one re-pitch each brand or geographic client stakeholder
Sometimes you staff with in house people, then back fill their role on another client
Sometimes you quietly lost a client at the same moment you loudly won a client and it’s a wash
Etc.
Good agency or bad agency?
Bad agency will wait as long as possible to fill in the roles because they didn’t plan accordingly. Sometimes up to a year without fully staffing after a win. Then let everyone go after they lose the client. Don’t forget sometimes underestimating the work and burning out old and new employees in the process.
Rising Star
It can many months after a pitch win for the agency and client to figure out scope of work and staffing.
Great question OP!
Chief
It varies OP, but generally once the press release hits Adweek or AdAge they’re already a couple weeks into the hiring process.
So that’s usually a good time to reach out. Don’t wait.
