You have to apply at the right time, know the right people, and have the credentials. Better to give yourself a few months or more than be up against a wall when applying. Accepting offers out of desperation isn’t ideal.
That’s true, I am going to factor in a few months
I think we do underestimate the role of timing. But I also believe that “timing” could be classified in terms of (a) the needs of a particular firm at that moment, and/or (b) when the right managers or partners making the hiring decisions are present. Just my experience, but a candidate can appear amazing in the eyes of some hiring managers, yet poor in the eyes of others. Timing could be great for some firms and bad for others. That’s why we cannot be limited in the number of firms we submit applications for.
I believe, however, that for many of us lawyers applying for various jobs, unless we have the right hiring managers assessing our candidacy, our application would still be rejected because we do not “fit the optimum profile” for the firm.
Ugh 😩

There are busy lateral hiring seasons and slow hiring seasons, it’s important to be ready to act and be actively looking as well as networking to not miss the right opportunity.
