It matters on the margins but nothing matters more than law school grades and related legal experience.
Ok 👍
Usually no. That said, I'm in DC. A pre-law career in a niche regulatory field on the government side can definitely open some doors with dc offices that cover that regulatory field
I've seen people graduate straight from catholic, AU, Howard, GMU, etc straight into biglaw/boutiques thanks to 5-10 years in a relevant field because for them the pool of candidates they won't have to train up is basically limited to that situation and laterals from agency OGCs.
My pre-law career helped me network into Big Law and pivot to an in-house role because it was relevant to my niche practice area and I already knew how to navigate a corporate environment. It depends on what you did and if you know how to sell yourself.
What you did before law school may help you in your career as it informs your thinking and outlook. Recruiters, however, will be mostly concerned with where you went to law school, how you performed, and what you've done since. Nonetheless, if you did some interesting work before law school you might mention it if you think it says something about you that people should know.
Thanks
Useful for hiring when they are trying to break a tie, but not usually a leg up otherwise in my experience. Unless super on point related to the legal job or something.
It really depends on your practice. I do a lot of work with IP attorneys where specialist skills and industry experience can be really sought after.
