Yes. If someone is applying but lives in a different state, that is where they will inform me that they're relocating to my area.
Also, if they appear to be "overqualified," I want to see why they're applying for a job below their current or most recent job. Often, older workers later in their careers are interested in stepping back (that was me years ago). It's also where they can state that they are aware the position they're applying for will pay less than they're currently making, and are able and willing to take the hit.
Without that cover letter, many companies will immediately reject the candidate as "overqualified."
Thank you for this comment. It's encouraging to hear that some take the time and are interested in getting to know candidates, their motivations and appreciate stages in life.
If a cover letter is not required then there should still be the opportunity to personalise an application beyond adapting CVs, whether in a form or in the cover email.
No. Pointless today in my opinion. Especially in a more competitive job market, I would not advise anything that would add more time for a recruiter who is looking over a resume. And, as most "older" candidates still like to use cover letters, it's an easy tell that can lead to potential age discrimination.
Cover letters are submitted only when they are required specifically, nothing to do with age
If a candidate takes the time to prepare a cover letter, I take the time to read it. If you have a problem with candidates using AI to support their application, does that mean you don't read their resumes either??
No. There is no point in them in current times, it’s an outdated practice. I agree people are using AI to write them. I prefer to a see well rounded and organized resume.
Rarely and only if their resume has something that I might need clarification.
