Do you think it's better to work hard and wait for a promotion based on your skills or to actively ask for and pursue a promotion?

No! Working hard does not pay off. Your increased output will become what your employer expects the baseline to be in the future.

I would have structured meetings with a manager under the pretense that you are actively seeking new responsibilities so that it will lead to a Promotion (it’s key that you spell it out for your boss). Find out the responsibilities, expectations, and requirements for the role and make it explicit that you are working towards that goal. If you do exactly what your boss tells you to meet the requirements for a promotion and they don’t give it to you, you have an argument to get it when it’s next available. If they are unwilling to give it to you after some time, then either coast at your role or find a new job. Either way, you didn’t overwork yourself with out making it known you want a promotion.

like

Thank you P1 I think I will ask for new responsibilities, I've been sitting back a little bit and I think it's time I step up a little bit. Ideally those actions will lead to promotion, and I'll bring it up as well.

Working harder =/= promotion.
Also, requesting or deserving one does not equal promotion.
It is important to have a clear destination position (what are you trying to get promoted to? Is it open? Are there others in line?) and a positive relationship (does the decision maker like you and want to move you up?)

Maybe you can build that goodwill by exceeding targets, but that is not the case in my organization.

Working hard does not pay off on its own. (Even when it benefits patients and your overall services.)
Having the right relationship and showing growth by targeting things the promoting decision makers care about (even if you believe these to be less important) is the spot you have to hit.

If your managers don’t care about the things you work hard on, or don’t want to sponsor you, that hard work will be a waste of effort beyond the direct benefits to the people you help along the way.

…you can also skip the hard work if you have an “in” with someone and express interest in promotion. I’m sure there is no shortage of such stories on this app.

like

Thank you this is a really thoughtful response. I think continue working hard but also try to grow my relationship with my current manager to see what she thinks.

Obviously do the work but if you think you deserve a promotion go ask for it because all too often managers are hoping to keep you in your current role and pay level for as long as possible

like

I'd say always speak explicitly that you want to move up. People in control will never know unless you say so out loud. We make little bookmarks in our heads every day and if you can do this seamlessly with getting your work done, you're gonna be a great candidate for promotion.

like

I received a promotion that I was not seeking. I did tell my boss what I was doing to promote my own growth, goals, etc. So, hard work definitely can pay off and lead to a promotion that you may not even be looking for!

like

Working hard does not always guarantee a promotion. Some people just use it to take advantage of you. Be clear with what you want and don't be afraid to voice it out.

like

I was taught that if you do good work/go above and beyond, your talent and work would eventually lead to a promotion. Just my belief.

I'm with PA1. If you're doing work that's worthy of a promotion, you'll get one when it's time.

I have a few questions for people in consulting roles (both external/internal).

My partner is in corporate banking, but he wants to switch to a consulting/strategy-based role. I noticed people with those jobs typically have an MBA, and also majority of the job ads in similar roles has MBA as either a requirement or preferred qualification. So:

1) does MBA actually improve someone's chance in getting those roles?
2) are there any good Canadian MBA programs you'd recommend?

Thank you all!

Do you think it is time to find another job when your PIC is a micro manager, never trained you when you got hired, expects you to know things no one ever told you about in the first place, texts and calls you in the morning with questions you don’t have an answer to (I work evening shift so I’m mostly sleep when he reaches out), assumes the worst about everything, plots against you anyway, lies all the time, they don’t even do their job, they leave their trash behind etc. gives me anxiety.
