There should be unlimited sick days that cover that. Vacation is for different things. Vacation for two weeks consecutive should be mandated once a year like in Switzerland. The rest you can take whenever Also it is a big issue if you put any hours on Saturday evening/Sunday and national holidays.
There should be sick days specifically for that, definitely unlimited in amount. I also feel when it seems the person is experiencing mental health discomfort, if you will, it would be good for the manager/ leadership, of the department, to investigate further and give the option to be out for a bit to get their mind right. Or send them to Employee Health so they can get access to the resources they need. Employers really want you to suffer for their purse, which is ridiculous.
PT1 - Your comment really supports all my other posts…the US employment rules are like medieval slavery! Look at Europe! Maternity in some places is 12 months full pay, vacation is 35 days easily, severance is mandated by government laws while we don’t have a contract and we are under “work at will”…lastly and more importantly there’s no limit to sick days in almost all countries globally! I tried finding a country that doesn’t have that and couldn’t! So you are sick working full time and you are not allowed to stay home until you recover? What will you do if you get COVID? Let say you are sick 3-4 months on and off then what should you do? Go in the office and infect everyone or work sick from home? Modern slavery!
I think it is a slippery slope when it comes to talking about someone’s mental state. It could very easily go from good intentions to unintended consequences.
Best practice is to remind everyone about the benefit of using PTO, work with leaders to make sure people are not being asked to work when they do take PTO, and educate everyone on your EAP as a personal resource.
I don't think anyone should be FORCED to take time off, but it should be readily available and actively encouraged. So many people feel guilt or shame. Getting rid of that stigma is a good first step. Take the time you need, no questions asked kind of thing.
First step should be to see the CEO and all senior management to take 2 weeks with no cell or laptop and post how nice it was on internal social. What they do in Europe is to slow down during August, Christmas, Easter, etc. employees are encouraged to take time off then and nobody bothers them. How does the same companies thrive in Europe and can’t do the same in the US? Take Nestle as an example or Pfizer or Pepsi or SAP. SAP literally shuts down during August in Germany.
As someone who had to take LOA eitjin the year, due to mental stress I think all employees should offer a separate amount of PTO time for mental stress. I feel employers don't care but what good would your employees be if they are not able to perform their job successfully. I know it happened to me for the first time. I was out 4 months and I felt so good mentally and eventually resigned from a job I really liked.
WOW. I agree 💯. I am in Virginia and trust me these employers here don't want to let you take vacations let alone be off. It's so sad.
Working in retail where I face angry customers who have 2-3x of my salary in their accounts at the same age (sub 30) I take all my PTO by November every year. I believe PTO and sick days need to be separated and not combined, it should be a federal regulation. Mental health especially in client facing jobs (even phone reps) have eons higher stress levels than back office, yet they all get the same bucket. Make it make sense for me that a wfh employee has the same pto as a in person facing employee who can easily get sick.
