Does anyone else have a teammate who takes every little thing personally? I’m just trying to get work done, but it feels like any bit of feedback is seen as a total attack. The other day, I suggested a different header font, and they acted like I was trying to trash their entire design. How do you deal with someone who's that defensive without feeling like you’re constantly walking on eggshells?

Unfortunately yes, I experience this as well. It’s either insecurity or an unchecked manipulation to get their way, as others have suggested. It’s a personnel issue. I typically give feedback with kid gloves on by lightly suggesting it be approached in another way so they still feel in control, but the feedback is still made clear.

This is, of course, unacceptable to cater to these kind of people and they should have it made clear that being able to take professional feedback is a core qualification of growing for any industry. If it’s your manager like it is for me, just bide your time and show others your quality of work. They likely won’t be in it for the long haul. If nothing changes, find a new role.

I had a direct report once that would respond to even minor correction with "here's feedback for you". I had to finish ever coaching by admitting the fault was mine or she would retaliated in some kind of juvenile way. That's the way it was at that company.

I don't have the luck to be able to work in engineering at the moment, but I believe the same strategy applies to any team members. I am incredibly flexible, so I find this to be pretty simple. You just have to put in the time and effort to get to know a person and learn how that person responds. Then you adjust how you speak to the person accordingly. Some people prefer jokes, some people like to be serious, some people want to know what they did wrong and how to improve. Some people need their egos stroked or they act toxic.

Those people are hard to deal with

Because no one ever told them no. Because they perceive a payback for that kind of manipulative behavior.

Yes, not everything is worth pushing back on but tiny stuff really shouldn’t be any cause for issues

Absolutely yes. Their arrogance is their biggest red flag of their insecurity. Your work ethic intimidates them. While You focus, doing your best work, they are convicted of their lack of integrity.
Keep Your Head Up. Keep doing things right and becoming a growing asset for your Company.
