Does anyone here take their job day by day, or do you have at least a 5 year plan? I used to plan for an MBA or Masters, now I have no interest in the field and I feel lost. Seeing everyone go into new jobs & graduate with their masters recently has me feeling like I’m not accomplishing anything.

I feel somewhat similar. It feels like a lot of people are going for an MBA and I feel like I should too but I am not sure if it makes 100% sense in my situation.

like

Kind of. I know that I’m building skills for a purpose. If you’re burned out then rest, you have time to plan.

The MBA will always be helpful later in your career - even if just to put on your resume when you want to apply to more senior levels. Most folks experience a pay bump after completing their MBA (usually timed with a job change). I got mine 10 years ago and I don’t regret it one bit. I also was an “old” MBA student as I didn’t get it until almost 10 years after undergrad.

like

I feel I was more confident about my 5 year plan back when I was graduating college rather than now 😅

like

Same! First week of work I told everyone my plan was to do an MBA after gaining experience in a certain area. 2 years later and I don’t enjoy that anymore, not sure what degree to do, or what career path to pursue 😐

like

I’ve always had a 3-5 year plan which incidentally has always worked out - but tends to run late (sometimes early). As you’ll see below I was super late in getting my MBA - was on the older side of MBA students. But it worked out just fine.

I’m still making 3-5 year plans now, but instead of focusing on climbing a ladder to MD/Partner as I approach 40 I’m thinking of “things I want to do while I’m youngish” - imo what good is being PPMD if you never have time to do all the stuff you want to do before your bones are stiff and your skin is wrinkly etc

Plan: get MBA by age 24-26 (3-5 years post college)
Reality: 29

Plan: make manager by age 24
Reality: 26

Plan: make director (industry) by 29
Reality: 29

Plan: buy an apartment in HCOL city by 30
Reality: 33

Keep on setting goals and don’t be disheartened if you are late.

Also don’t work too hard when you’re young - enjoy life a bit. I used to think: man I’m in my 20s might as well grind and be successful there’s time to enjoy life later - fast forward years later yes, I make good money, but you’re only in your 20’s once!

People who don’t submit their time daily, how do you remember what you did and for how long? I’ve always just submitted each timer as soon as I finish a task—“call with x re y” really doesn’t take that long even if I’m busy, and if I don’t do it immediately I’ll forget all those little I did in the morning by the time I go to bed. No shade at all to those with different systems, just genuinely curious because I see a lot about catching up at month end on here and I have no idea how that works??

What does an exit from Salesforce consulting look like? I’m in a technical role leading a small team so my understanding is a technical/solution architect or a development team lead at either Salesforce or an end user like Amazon/Amex.

I have bounced around a couple consulting companies so would prefer not to do it again. Total 4 YOE.

I don’t think I have enough YOE to go for a program architect role at SF otherwise I’d be interested.

I saw someone else do this, so imma give it a shot. Lately, I’ve been applying to iOS developer roles and I’m getting TONs of calls and callbacks from HR and recruiting managers, but then when my resume gets pushed to hiring managers they seem to often get peeved at how little years of experience I have with the title “iOS developer”…
which is fair, and to show my credibility I published my first app last week, but I’m still getting similar messages from recruiters this week. Idk what to do??
