Lol. It’s cheating. Point of school is to teach kids how to think critically & problem solve. Homework & projects is the requisite forum to foster those goals. If no explicit school policy on it, assume that delegating to AI is cheating, plain and simple. Sad to hear all the folks on here that encourage it. Is it any wonder that lots of these kids have the IQ equivalent of gnats and can’t problem solve, think, or reason without first “checking” their smart phones?
As for the notion that “kids today” are generally good critical thinkers. I would have to respectfully disagree. I do case studies all the time for my firm from students from supposedly elite schools. The students all use the same case books to prep. Ask most of them a question outside of what their casebook state they memorize (not to see if they get it right, rather their problem solving process and they get untangled). I’ve been doing this for a long time. Sadly, it has gotten notably worse over the years.

Schools typically have a policy in place, either broadly or per assignment. If they don’t, ask about it
It’s a fool’s errand to not use it at all, but schools have generally been very forward-thinking about it. I know one high school educator who allows AI on all writing assignments, but she uses ChatGPT’s raw output to set the baseline for a D.
Pro
I absolutely would if my kid was old enough. The people who are going to be successful are those who know how to use AI to give themselves a leg up. The earlier they learn, the better.
All the time.
