Yes, Slack is awesome and is widely used.
Do you mean you want to switch _internal_ communication from (high volume of) emails to an app like Slack?
Slack is a fantastic messaging system. Think of it more like instant messaging than email. I.e. teams/IM (but ACTUALLY good).
The way it handles channels, conversations threads, etc. Is fantastic.
They've got a bunch of new and improving features too (huddle, task list, etc.) so they're spreading past just messaging atm.
Pros:
- easy to have internal only messaging (I find email is open for ANYONE to email you so you get a lot of external advertising noise)
- it's one of the best instant messaging units with control on who can read which channels, timed messages, message reminders
- has a TON of business tool integrations (Jira, Confluence, Zendesk, and more) so if you have a process automation team you can help streamline activities a lot with it.
Cons:
- like any instant messaging system it encourages high flow of messaging which I find more distracting for key business conversations
- you have to pay to maintain history of messages past a certain point (but most businesses can afford it)
“but ACTUALLY good” 😂 It’s so true!
I also have mostly very good things to say about Slack. The only downside I've encountered regularly is that it can become almost addictive and people use it maybe more than they should. So the signal to noise ratio can get out of hand. But that's really a people problem, not the fault of the tool. If things are kept pretty businesslike it's a highly useful tool, adaptable to just about any communication need.
They do the same things with email tbh. Though I found it was easier to limit checking emails to twice a day (start and end, 15 minutes each).
Yes and love it! Not sure how I'd get along without it, honestly!
Big fan of Slack for internal comms, especially for remote teams / companies. For some reason I find it much more encouraging of active, ongoing communication than Teams.
