Does it bother anyone that a rich, old, white, career politician was able to walk ass-backwards into the Democratic candidacy for the president of the United States? There were lots of better qualified people that didn't even have a practical path to the position.

Similarly, does it bother anyone that a rich, old, white, unempathizing man wasn't even challenged practically for the Republican candidacy?

What does this say about the two party system and society in its current state?

Rich, old, white means evil right? Confirming my understanding

like

No. There's a historical pattern in the demographic that rises to the presidency that sincerely raises questions of societal values and the way we perceive people subconsciously.

Warren Buffet, for example, is a rich, white, old man that has rational things to say a lot of the times.

And, if it helps steer the conversation in a more productive way or anyone cares (which I'd argue nobody should care), I'm a young white man.

Rich - not going to hate on anyone’s financial successes
Old - not anyone’s fault. With a little luck, we’ll all be old someday
White - race is not something anyone can decide
Career Politician - why does it surprise you that someone who has done a job for 30+ years gets an interview for a similar job?

Also, who are you mad at? The voters who put these two up for election? Welcome to democracy, my friend.

Thank you VP1. I'll try to answer your questions, though they may have been intended to be introspective.

Career politician - that doesn't surprise me if they've shown a track record of being effective in the roles that they held. I'd happily vote for someone with lots of experience that has a good resume and speaks to solving problems that I believe are significant. I don't see that being the case for the Trump/Biden election. Though it's probably too late to effectuate change in terms of the practical candidates for the upcoming 2020 election, it's my belief that we can use this consequence to re-evaluate how we function as a democracy.

Response to your last couple of questions - I'm frustrated mostly with the lack of accountability from the general public for perpetuating the very system that we have in its current state. In short, I don't accept the current status, and I want to talk about it.

Not bothered at all. The Democratic Party put forward a number of qualified candidates and the American people chose their preferred candidate.

Take that chip off your shoulder.

It wasn't intend to be an attack on anyone based on age, race, financial status. I think there's a lot more old, white, rich guys out there that would've been better options. I know that's not for me to decide. I'm not saying that it is. But general impression I perceive from the public is that we're unhappy with the two practical choices in front of us.

Tried to frame a thought provoking question on what it says about society and the two party system if old, rich, white guys have a disproportionate practical path to the presidency, especially if the general sentiment in the country is that we're unhappy with the current situation.

“Walk ass-backwards” is a weird way to describe the black democratic electorate.

Sorry - read too quick and misinterpreted the meaning behind your post. Your point is fair about my choice of words. Thank you.

Thanks everyone who replied. My initial impression is that the general direction of this thread is productive. So I'm going to devote more time to it.

I'm going to try to respond to the conversations that I'd like to pursue. Bear with me. It's going to take some time. I have other stuff going on today that I'd also like to be able to do.

In the meantime, I encourage all others to respond to the conversations that they'd like to pursue. Participation, rationality, and open-mindedness are the very things that I advocate for, and I believe are fundamental steps we must take to reduce perceived polarization.

Not bothered by the rich, old, and white part. Just bothered they are both dingleberries.

I'm not particularly concerned with their race, gender, or finances. On age - we should stop valuing experience in politics so much. Our current leadership aside, I trust successful private sector men and women far more than I trust a career politician, both in terms of leadership abilities and values.

Our system is completely broken. Until we get a functional ranked-choice voting system and make it easier to vote for everyone (why tf is anyone still using paper and why aren't we voting on Saturdays??), we'll continue getting trash candidates to lead our trash government.

like

Thank you D1 and C1.

The only added consideration from my view is that the general public is also accountable for the system that exists today. Democracy is a function of the market. The general public is the marketplace. Politicians speak to the marketplace in a way that they can get elected.

Imagine a society that was educated enough to know these psychological influences (many of which are common sense and don't really require much time to learn at a usable level). I'd hypothesize that it would drastically reduce the effectiveness of the current divisive rhetoric. Secondary consequences could be a more educated, motivated, and inclusive society.

I'm happy to make recommendations for quick-reads related to psychology if anyone is interested.

I dislike that name recognition matters above all. What would you propose? An electoral college for the primary?

like

Agree that name recognition is hard to overcome. I don't think it'll ever be 100% avoidable (in any facet of society).

I'd hypothesize that more rational thought and an open discussion amongst the general public on topics that matter can reduce the effectiveness of name recognition bias.

Would you make the same statement if Bernie was the nominee?

I think you’re the one assuming too much here.. ey2 just asked a single question

like

Not bothered, the millions of Americans who have already voted agree with me. Next.

And to add, I don't try to convince anyone of my political stances. I try to learn from others through conversations that matter to me.

In short, I don't care who other people vote for. I just want to talk to them about topics that matter to me in an environment that is inclusive of different perspective.

Should have been Pete

Went through multi-day loop for L5 SA and felt confident in my interactions. Presentation went well with no lack of answers for follow up questions. Just found out 6 days later I will not be receiving an offer, and it is policy to not provide feedback of gaps or reasons behind no offer. Also found out they ask you not to reapply for 1 to 2 years for same role. Would anyone recommend an alternate path for feedback on interview (outside of recruiter) and is the 1-2 year policy true?

GCA Questions Help

Hi everyone!
I've had 2 rounds of interviews at Google (UK) for a non-tech role in Platforms & Ecosystems (L4/L5). Recruiter told me that I've been selected for the final rounds (GCA + Leadership Interview). From his feedback, one thing they wanted me to improve on was the GCA Questions. Would anyone have any tips on how to prepare for these? I've checked some of Jeff Sipe videos online but would appreciate any support! I find GCA quite stressful...
Thx
Thanks in advance!

My problem is I have been more of a homebody since I moved here and I'm a little intimidated to go out and meet people because I don't feel like I fit in here. I am overweight and this city is full of active, and attractive people. I guess I am wondering what my experience would be if I got out more? I feel like people look at me when I'm in public because I stand out due to my size.
