Does tech trans have a real place in a post-AI world? A lot of diligence feels highly automatable — AI can already review contracts, extract clauses, flag issues, and check the box—“we have reviewed and identified no material issues…” And standalone commercial contracting has always been tough to justify at BigLaw billing rates.

Does this practice shrink to a small group of true specialists who handle the edge cases and judgment calls? Or am I missing where the durable value is long-term?

As a client who uses outside counsels for this type of work, I’d say you’re right to be worried. The AI tools we have at our disposal can already do so much and is only getting better with time.

I’m a tech trans partner at one of the SV flagship firms. I think a lot of this work will dry up with AI. That said, this work can be negotiation intensive at the high levels, and some of the sophisticated deals (biotech partnering deals, etc) are pretty high stakes and likely wouldn’t be eliminated by AI. But yes—if you are just cranking out SaaS agreements you should probably be worried.

I think learning the market and how to negotiate is valuable. The reason a lot of clients like me (and other SV attorneys like me) is because we have done the exact deals they are doing dozens of times. People want a true subject matter expert. I would make sure you are absorbing those aspects of practice and not just implementing changes into docs. Your drafting skills aren’t gonna be worth that much in 5 years.

I think it’ll shrink for junior level commercial contracts as experienced commercial contracting attorneys use AI more.

Any EU attorneys who went for an LL. M. in international commercial law (or other) in Europe?

If so have you found it "worth" the year of your time? I am currently working at a firm that specializes mostly on commercial law and has a lot of foreign clients. I have some options regarding the possible LL. M. One of them is little less prestigeous that would allow me to stay working at law firm as I am studying. The other would mean taking a year off work and pursuing the LL. M, Thanks for help

When BigLaw attorneys interview students, how soon afterward do they give feedback? What kind of feedback do you give as an interviewer at your firm (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, thumbs up, thumbs down, veto)? Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?
