Good morning. I am currently a senior associate in BugLaw, and I have applied to several trial attorney jobs in Chicago offices of federal agencies since the start of the pandemic. According to usajobs.gov, my applications to the DOJ and CFTC were “referred,” and my application to the SEC was received and my GS scale verified. But I haven’t received any updates on these applications in over a month. Does anyone here have any insights on these or on federal hiring generally? Thanks!

You and I both know that you already know the answer.
It seems to me that so many posts here over the last week can be answered by just saying, "you know the right the to do. Just fucking be a good person and do it. This shit isn't complicated—your conscience knows the damn answer. Just have the courage to not be an asshole, because it really doesn't take that much."
Why sell yourself for $550?
Pocket it and put it towards your 401k and watch it grow.
You could mention you're nearby, so you can save them some money... Bonus points
I think it's not ethical to travel to an interview using the clients money. Technically the interviewing company should pay for it. Just to complicate things. Haha
No one will give a shit if you save them money. Also it's like you want someone on here to say - go do it - to make yourself feel better when you eventually do it anyway. Don't worry, you'll feel better about pocketing the money when you don't get the offer.
@atk is right. The most ethical move is to get the travel reimbursed and write your client a check. But you aren't going to do that, are you
I suppose that what I'm suggesting here is that there's no dilemma. You already know the answer, because it's obvious—you're only asking because your conscience is telling you that there's something with pocketing money intended for reimbursement of specific costs. Your conscience is right, so just listen to it and let that be the end of it.
Normally I'm all for taking every penny we're able out of these monstrous company's, But in this case, not worth it.
Book a flex trip?
Quit being a cheap, greedy, slimy fuck. Simple.
Fucking do it for sure! Take the money
...Or you can just do the right thing and not ask a group of strangers if it's ok to cheat. If you have to ask, you know the answer
Money not earned week eat away and make you sick.
All that is true D1 but this is a genuine discussion point. Thanks for the guiding principle though
I agree with B2, let them know that you're close by and win some brownie points
Ethical issues aside wouldn't you have to produce a receipt to get reimbursed?
