set boundaries and stick to them. I remember a corporate partner at a top NY big-law firm I used to work with as a junior associate who always seemed to be going on vacation to far off adventure destinations, none of which had wifi or cell service. He handed over each of his matters in advance and disappeared. The partner unfortunately passed in his sixties just as he was about to retire, but I'll always remember that he truly lived a solid life even while working.
My truth is that, other than 2 vacations to extremely remote destinations taken relatively early in my career, I have never been truly "off."
I let clients and my assistant know in advance when I'm going to on vacation to get rid of any fires and most of them are understanding, but there's always about 1-1.5 hours/day spent reading/responding to emails or "emergency" calls.
Before anyone thinks my situation is sad, let me add that I'm totally fine with this setup and my wife is very understanding. I consider it a small price to pay for living a life that 99% of the population doesn't get to. I've also adapted to taking lengthier vacations, primarily in Europe and Asia, where wifi is spotless and work spaces are plentiful.
But, yeah, recommend that you get your "adventure travel" out of the way now and save the luxe travel for later in your career because it gets increasingly difficult to be totally disconnected.
See but this is reasonable . The time you’re putting in isn’t most of each day. 1-1.5 is nothing compared to our normal days.
Yes- you have to care less
Nov-Dec PTO is overrated. During this time travel is more expensive, there are more transit delays, and heightened risk of getting sick right before you leave (or even during!) that can ruin your R&R.
IMO, better to “volunteer” to stay for coverage and take time off when it’s less busy like Spring/Fall.
“And mom and dad can hardly wait for school to start again” hits different now…
No such thing as real PTO at these firms. Chain yourself to the desk and accept it as part of your firm’s culture.
On the upside, it sounds like you actually get to step outside of the office during holidays. That’s the equivalent of taking PTO these days, getting to work from home on Christmas Day, New Year’s, etc.
You sound miserable
TBF, in transactional practice, year end vacations are notoriously difficult if not impossible to be fully off but for maybe the latter half of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
As someone above said, it’s hard to be fully off over the holiday period if you work in transactional practice. If you don’t do it, who’s going to? I tend to just stick my OOO off and try to work less but if things come up (as they always do) I have to deal with them. If you’re actually away and can’t work over that period, line up proper holiday cover, but if you do that every year it won’t be looked on well because everyone wants to be off (as much as they can) during that period but it’s always crazy with deadlines.
Just take the time. The work will be there.
You don't...but you take care of yourself so you won't burnout in January. Turn your phone off, and keep in mind you are replaceable. And by that I mean if you can't do the job or get burned out, you firm will replace you just like that
Its REALLY hard to take EOY vacation. I usually take a week during my kids spring break, a week beginning of June and a week at the end of summer. During the end of December ill take half days, work remote (otherwise we have 3 day in office policy) and relax at home if im not needed, but I definitely dont schedule formal vacations or fly anywhere or book anything. Things have a way if “blowing up” so to speak in December
