By "lateral move but promotion" do you mean "lateral move but raise"? If you're talking small Midwest RURAL, I'd say closer to $30-40k. SF is highest cost of living in country, plus tons of other expenses you won't have previously incurred
SF is the most expensive city in the country, definitely ask for 30-40 more.
100K for an AS isn’t ridiculous in NY, so I imagine the same can be said for SF
You're going to have a hard time having a comparable quality of life in SF on $100K. I know AS's in LA who make more than that at big agencies on major global accounts.
You should try to double your salary, honestly. If you're not comfortable with that, start prelim apartment hunting online and figure out what you need to have a comparable quality of life with your increase in rent.
Look at Glassdoor, get the range for that city, (67-136) and ask for something fair based on your experience (since you're already a sup, I'd ask for 110 and be happy with 100). Do NOT move to SF for less than 100k. Cities like San Fran aren't fun when you can't afford to do the things that make them fun. Also keep in mind, 30k more might seem like a ton to you, but you're still going to be cheaper and more reliable than if the agency had to higher a new person in the market. The ball is totally in your court.
Seconding 30-40, the cost of living in SF is outrageously high. Rent alone hurts.
When you're making 70k in sf, you'll wish you had asked. You need 90k.
Ask for $100. SF is so expensive. This is not considered a high salary for that city.
Lateral but more visible client in terms of the agency.
That’s a lot of money haha. Are agencies used to seeing this jump? I currently make 70k (which is visible Bc I’m internal) and don’t want to get laughed at for saying I need 95k/100k for the opportunity to be worth it.
Do you currently own or rent?
Rent.
And thanks for the info yall! I def have to bring it up, but when is the right time? First “exploratory call is tomorrow”. Is this a right out the gate thing or make em love me then hit em with it 🤔
If it's in-agency, don't they already know what you make?
Rent is probably your biggest difference, run those numbers first
You can do way more, don't shortchangee yourself. I believe SF is the most expensive city in the US.
I did the same thing - kinda. Moved within a agency Relo from LA to SF. I never mentioned the salary increase but was offered 100k (was making 70k in LA). So it lucked out for me. Honestly this city is insanely expensive and I have lived around the world in some pretty expensive places. Like others said make sure you fully research rent as that's the biggest difference you'll likely experience.
