Fellow HR or HMs on the bowl, how do you deal with the regret of making the wrong hiring choices? I made a couple of bad hires two months ago, and we're already at the point where the right thing to do might be to let them go. Always late to work, not hitting targets and taking much longer breaks than allowed. I feel so responsible and like the weight of this whole situation is on me. How do you shake out of it and work on having better judgment the next time around?

That’s a tough spot, but it happens to the best of us! Hiring is never an exact science, and sometimes people just don’t work out, no matter how careful you are. What’s helped me is treating each hiring “miss” as a learning opportunity, reviewing what red flags I might have missed or what questions I could ask differently next time. Don’t beat yourself up; just focus on clear communication and fair processes moving forward.

Facing this too! I did have some reservations about them, but didn’t feel it was enough to justify not giving an offer because they did match so many of the qualifications. Learning to trust instincts more.

Dont beat yourself up for giving people a chance. Sometimes you just don’t know who has what it takes to make it and who is faking it. At the same time don’t allow these experiences to give you tunnel vision when looking for new candidates.

Partners, have you ever been recruited by a client and turn it down? If so, were there any repercussions? I am one year from partner and being recruited by a client...looking like they will move quickly on an offer after initial interviews and I’m worried that if I turn it down it’ll be tough to sell back to that client.
