First year family law associate..I only have 1160 billable hours done for the year (I’m including what I expect to bill in December as well). Given I only make $80,000 a year, is that reasonable? Or is that a super low number and should I expect to be fired soon 😂. My target billables is supposed to be 1680 a year. Also my hourly rate is only $109 because all we do is legal aid here.

1680 for $80k seems like a rip off. Lateral.

like

Yeah..I completely agree with you..looking into it! Just don’t want to get fired until I find something else in the meantime?

Any idea what your peers are billing? If you’re comparable to them, then I’d say you’re good. If significantly lower, maybe time to raise your hand for more work.

like

You’re fine. It’s your first year and they pay u shit

like

Thats super super off your target. I would talk to your managing partner. Even if you feel $80k for the target, you still agreed to it and accepted the job. Have you mean asking for work throughout the year?

like

Ah that’s crummy — most places will give you credit for all time recorded. If they weren’t going to do that feels like they needed to be clearer about it

like

I have no clue what my peers are billing but I’ve spoken with one of them and she’s got about the same as me. We’re both pretty concerned about being fired but honestly I hate family law and billables so much I’m thinking of changing specialties anyway

like

Sounds very fair to me.

Where are you located?

Just outside of Toronto, in Canada

Are you kidding … I’m a 2nd year in family and I’m making $65k

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Thoughts on making the shift?
