You’re basically a executive assistant
Coach
There a wide range of scopes chiefs of staff can have, from essentially an EA to director level. This HBR article lays it out well: https://hbr.org/2020/05/the-case-for-a-chief-of-staff
Would depend on whose CoS would you be. For CxOs, many times it is VP and SVP level folks who are staffed. It is about shadowing the executive and building the bench for the organization
Many CoS roles are very strategic where the expectations are to reduce the load on the executive. Be part or critical conversations and drive point on many initiatives..exit opportunities can be plenty internal to the organization or externally as well..good luck
I think it depends on company. That other comment said it’s like an executive assistant which I’ve heard is true in some cases. But at a previous company I worked for, the Chief of Staff was basically second-in-command
I’ve been researching this as well. There are various levels of CoS roles and they vary from org to org. So make sure to understand the role in grave detail before you accept an offer. This article helped me differentiate between types of CoS ranging from glorified EA to C-level strategic partner -

COS is a transition role. It’s great because you are able to network with senior executives, work on core strategy work and really have a seat at the table. It’s not the sexiest in terms of the work you do but what you learn is fantastic. I would say stick in the role for max 2 yesrs

Often leading a business unit
That’s a lot of likes in a short period of time, looks like more people are interested in finding out as well 🤣
It really depends company to company and who you’re going to be chief of staff for. Avoid job descriptions that say past experience as exec admin helps or includes responsibilities around scheduling, being a gatekeeper for their calendar, running team meetings, managing budgets since those are mostly operational and exec admin type stuff. Focus on roles that talk about the candidate owning end-to-end initiatives. And honestly, the more YOE they expect for the role, the more strategic I would expect it to be.

Thanks!
My role isn’t titled CoS but fits closely. For my department it is scheduling core meetings, tracking department progress and OKRS, holding the overall strategic plan, supporting our resourcing and investment needs, and helping with ad hoc strategic initiatives that don’t fall in others roles
Thank you for the insight. I have been told it’s mostly considered a transitionary role that folks hold for 2-3 years to network and learn high level strategy. What do you envision your long term term career growth or trajectory to be after this role?
