You haven’t gotten much response so I’ll weigh in even though I haven’t been in big law. I work for county government and I love it. I was in private small-firm practice before for 10 years. For me the government money and benefits are good, and actually better than working for the small firms. I never wanted to go into big law because I thought it would be boring, and I also didn’t want to work crazy long hours like that. My work is fascinating and I love the people I work with. There’s never a dull day working in criminal law! I like the stability too, like annual cost of living raises and not depending on billables or collections.
I didn’t find it particularly rewarding. For the feds it might be better but state/city govt is full of both amazing people and the worst coworkers you’ve ever had who can’t be fired. But I worked like 20 hours a week (efficient plus barely supervised)so that was nice. I transitioned back to biglaw after a few years.
