For parents that do daycare drop off / pickups, what time do you get in the office and leave the office? New job requires hybrid and I don’t see how I can be in the office 9-5 and still make daycare drop off & pickups. Commute is almost an hour

Interesting daycare hours, very constraining, almost feels like it’s not intended for working parents. Daycares in my area are typically between 6am to 7am and typically go through 6pm to 630pm. Outs is 630am to 630pm, so it’s easier to navigate flexibility with work

Where are you located

This struck a nerve. I did not read any comments. Day care sucks, work life balance sucks. It all sucks.

The only thing that saved our marriage, was resetting our lives, we both took a giant, and I mean giant! Over $100,000, reduction, each, and took different jobs with much, much, much, less stress.

In the end, I am a very happy person, and we are a very happy family

That sounds like an extremely fortunate situation. Most don't make over $100k and if each of you were able to take 100k pay cuts and still live comfortably, then of course it was an easy decision. You are right, though, daycares suck.

Enter the night shift. Our daycare operates 8:30-4:30 (crazy!) And I have a 1hr commute to the office. I try to go in only when absolutely necessary even though we're 'encouraged' to go 3-4x a week. On the days I ho in, I get in at about 10 and leave no later than 3:15. I then pull in a couple of extra hours at night after the kids go to sleep. It's not ideal, but I'm glad I have that flexibility at work

Following, I have the same issue with a new job I’m starting!

We don’t do daycare but our twins are in pre-school 3 days a week. My job is wildly flexible and my wife is a SAHM. Plus my sister and MIL live with us and help. I also WFH 3 days a week and choose which days depending on meetings.

So if I have to be in the office she handles drop off and pick up and takes the baby. If I’m WFH we all go as a family, like this morning. I sometimes have 8:30am or 9am calls while WFH and if that’s the case I typically take them from the road if possible and just put a headphone in. I had 8-8:30am and 9:30-11:30am international calls today and am WFH, so I was able to make the 9am drop off no problem.

We’re all treated like professionals at my job though and I’m not chained to a desk 9-5. No one is policing my time as long as I don’t miss meetings or deadlines. I can roll in at 9:30 or 10 depending on meetings and leave at 3 if I wanted.

you spoke to your wife about this 😆

what you do for your family is your own decision but adding what you think others "should" do is not your place. you're are really digging in on being unhelpful huh

Our daycare was open 6:30-6:30. What’s goods a daycare that doesn’t open until 8am? But my SO and and I split drop off/pick up. I did drop off because I could typically do it later and they did pick up because they had a job with a consistent end time.

You might need to change daycare

We got a trusted sitter/nanny who will drop off and pick up my 4 yo from daycare 3 days a week. The days I am at work and husband has to also commute longer than me. Leaving early or coming in late is not an issue in most companies however, you will miss out on making connections and building relationships such as in person meetings or dinner/drinks post 5. So, either divide and conquer or find a support system

We were in a similar situation (day care open 715-615) and split- I did morning drop off and husband did afternoon pick up. We had a day care close to the office which helped with timing (and flexibility if a client meeting popped up). Given it’s only two days, maybe you spouse could split with you?

Same -our daycare is open 7 to 7. Maybe look around before bringing it up with the new employer. Or wait until you are there a few months before mentioning.

Is it possible to find a daycare midway between home and work that may also be on the way (at least somewhat) for the other parent? If so, you could do daycare the 2 days you are in office, and they could do it the other 3 days?

Most days I do drop off and my husband picks up. I get to work around 9:30 but then can stay “later” until 530.

Get a different daycare. No one owes office hours you don't just because you have kids.

Our daycare is from 7am to 6pm.. commute for us is 10 minutes from office to daycare. work from 9 to 5-5.30. best if you can find a daycare close to work.

It’s been a long time since I did daycare however when my kids were that age there was no option to WFH in any capacity. I worked an hour from home so looked at the hours of the daycare. I needed one with a drop off between 7:00-7:30 and pick up time till 6:00. If tag teaming with the dad isn’t an option see if you can recruit another parent there and tag team with a friend to taking turns.

You didn't think of this before accepting the job?

Change daycares.

Is extended afterschool care available? We paid extra to extend hours to 6:30pm.

just out if curiosity - how old kids are we talking about here?

We opted for daycare whereby drop off was 7am and pick up was 6:30pm. We would alternate our days (I.e the days I worked from home I would do the drop offs and pick ups and vice versa). I also reduced my working week by condensing my hours into 4 days.
I now work five days a week with my child in after school clubs most days. I work from home three days a week which allows me to continue to do the drop offs at 8:30am and pick up at 4:30pm.

When mine was little we did an au pair, but they also are limited in their total hours. My husband and I have always split, he starts work super early and does pick up around 4:30. Drop off is around 7:30-7:45 for me on wfh, I start at 8 and in office weeks closer to 8:30.

Since you have two days in the office, maybe he could get pick up and drop off those days in exchange for you doing double other days.

Other thoughts, you may find that certain meetings can just be a call... schedule them for your commute.

Considering leaving my agency after just a couple months in pharma - feeling underutilized and stuck.

My question: do I leave this stint off my resume entirely? List the parent agency instead of the wellness arm? Pass it off as freelance? Not trying to be dishonest I just know this experience probably isn’t relevant when going out for non-pharma jobs.
