Who cares about the feelings of people who live far away from in person events? Should they not be held because others can’t attend? Should we fly them in?

People choose to live where they live, and I'd that means they can't attend most in person things that's on them and they should consider that when deciding where to live. I'm one of those - I moved to a city where nobody else on my team is and am over an hour from that city, so most anything in person is out the window and I'm good with that.
That said, if the company is remote first, there should be an allocated budget to bring the whole team together every so often (bi-annually or quarterly maybe) so that nobody's entirely missing out.
I will offer my opinion - I love happy hours and in person interaction, and need it to be functional at work. I don’t have much sympathy for people who can’t attend when they chose to live far away from the HQ. that being said, I know that in terms of relationship building, it will put those remote only employees at a big disadvantage

Yep, I made my choice (flexibility) and am comfortable with it. If it takes me six months longer to get a promotion, fine by me. All about personal preferences.

I am in the midst of (hopefully) going permanent remote in a different city. It’s my choice so the people who stuck around can do all the in-person stuff they want, couldn’t matter less to me.
That's sort of on the people who chose to live farther away from the office. It's up to them to choose where they live, but they can't complain if there are events planned and it's in person.
Ok follow up question - would you feel bad for planning a recurring in person team event when 30% of the team won’t be able to attend because they live out of state?

Nope, they choose to live out of state
Is Deloitte now remote first?
Ah, was just curious as I’ve heard Deloitte was going to be remote first if projects allowed it (have no idea if this is correct). I see how you worded it originally now, my fault lol
