Don’t worry about it. I believe the perception is that “VP” is a title given to anyone who has 5 years of experience at an agency. I think that title is a bit laughable agency side. And “group” doesn’t really mean anything brand side. Everyone knows that agency titles are inflated.
When you go brand side, these don’t matter anymore, esp if you decide to stay there and evolve in this world (which I recommend). I have CCO friends who have become “Executive Director” and they are extremely respectable.
I have a weird title brand side that no one really gets on the agency side (“_____ Director”) and I’m not intending to go back. I’m focusing on what it means brand side and looking at the titles I could become here instead.
Anyway, congrats! 🎉
Depends on what agency you are coming from and what company you are going to.
For example: a VP of a 50 person company is very different than a VP of a 10,000 person company.
Ideally, with a drop in title, you are going from a high title in a smaller company. The opposite would seem like a lateral or incremental lift, if any. More likely a drop.
And in the end, I recommend focusing on impact and the job itself. Titles mean nothing, really... will you be challenged and satisfied in this new role?
It's going from a big, top tier media agency to a large public company (with sizable media budget).
I agree that the impact and job are more important and that's why I'm leaning that way.
Just trying to solicit some advice - thanks!
Yeah titles are totally different on client side. Think about it, agency side always has fancier titles so they can bill the client higher. Just focus on the day to day responsibilities and if that matches what you are looking for then go for it. I made the jump from svp to a manager level. Pay a bit lower but work also a lot more interesting
Sounds like a lateral move. My boss has the title of “director” but at agency was evp group planning director. Especially at large publicly traded companies titles are highly regimented and banded. I work at a 100k+ employee company and we have maybe 75 VPs and higher
Somewhat of a drop, but having that brand in your CV won't hurt.
I did something similar myself 2 or so years ago abd I now work for a brand. I kinda do regret it, but I did learn a lot about the business side of things. Cant wait to bring this back to agency side when things get back to normal.
