New York is king for the ad scene.
Chicago is second.
It’s very hard to make ends meet on a junior salary in New York (I mean it’s not great in Chicago but overall it’s a much better quality of life on low income)
I mean doesnt pretty much every major holding company have a building full of agencies or multiple offices in Chicago?
Chicago- all of the same agencies, a summer you actually enjoy instead of leaving, nice people, clean, I can’t say enough amazing things but I’m also biased
NYC - There are fewer opportunities in Chicago and outside of Chicago the Midwest has nothing else to offer. There’s a reason NYC is pricey and it’s worth it. Just get a roommate (or 2) and live in the UES. Don’t fall for the Brooklyn trap. It’s overpriced.
Pro
As a Chicagoan who built my book there, you’ll build a better book faster in New York. If you’re after the book, New York.
You’ll be poor in both cities.
Chicago is less intense (usually) and more affordable, if that’s what you want
NYC all day
I first moved to NYC on a junior level salary on my own, no financial support from my parents. Sublet an apartment, save money and work your way up. Don’t live outside of your means and you’ll be fine.
NYC for the social life too.
Consider your career goal over the next few years and then long-term. Instead of where geographically, consider which companies where you will grow in the direction that helps your career goals.
NY for sure!
