I did this, and found it worked well. I would make sure to try to do it as a 2nd or 3rd year, because you’ll benefit from having the early client contact and responsible that boutique gives you, but you will still be trainable from a biglaw perspective, and likely won’t have to go down a class year.
I did this as a more senior associate, and looking back I should have jumped ship and moved to a big market sooner. Get all the hands on experience you can at your small firm - biglaw generally values that in laterals. You're probably most marketable with 3-4 years of practice.
Certainly doable, but the market is a little extra competitive this year. I would try and wait it out until everything goes back to normal and try then.
That’s my plan. Gain practical experience now and look to move once the market is more stable.
It really depends on the boutique. If it’s the kind of place started by former biglaw partners with that kind of work and expectations, and has a strong reputation outside the local market, then it’s easier. Not that you can’t do it from a different type of boutique, just will be harder.
Good to know! I just entered my third year, so seems like the timeline is good.
