Genuinely curious question: why do so many international students want to get MBAs in the US... it’s hard for them to get work here, with Trump it’s hard to even get and stay here, so what’s the appeal? There are plenty of other good universities internationally so why the expensive ones in the US?

The immigration rules being difficult is more of a recent phenomenon, might ease up in the future. But apart from the money, it’s the fact that the US is generally very welcoming of newcomers, due to its history of immigration. Other countries like Spain or Germany have rigid definitions of what it means to be one of them, and aren’t as welcoming to potential residents. Apart from Canada (where I’m from!) I think there are very few developed countries that are as diverse and open (ignoring recent outliers) to newcomers.

While I would say its more blatant in southern europe because its less white collar and poorer etc. it is much more insidious in northern europe in that there are much more serious power dynamics. Natives will be nice to your face but in their heads and in their closed groups would never entertain the idea of promoting you above them regardless of your work ethic.

We love to talk about Scandinavia, Holland, Switzerland being utopias but there is a very real (and low) glass ceilings for non-natives.

like

Well you can also look at it through an education/academic perspective.

Sure there are other good universities internationally, but there’s no denying that the US has by far the highest concentration of top universities. That concentration leads to the US having the strongest academic community in the world which in turn produces the strongest research in the world. Beyond anecdotal evidence, just look at the list of Nobel Prize laureates in economics and their alma maters/institutions. Something like 80-90% come from US institutions. Factor in the prestige of the top US business schools which at the least attracts the best and brightest US citizens, and it’s clear that when looking at countries’ top universities, the US has the strongest university system in the world. Complain about tuition and the other problems of US higher education all you want, but from the perspective of education and community, US universities are clearly best in class. Wouldn’t you want to go to the world’s best in class universities?

like

Exactly, that’s why I was wondering why even bother with the US, and people gave great perspective in the post

There is a big pay difference between the US and other economies and people still have this weird obsession with the US being supreme to all other countries.

Is the university of Toronto on the same level internationally as Harvard or mit? No obviously it’s not.
Is it a phenomenal school and I’m sure the best school in Canada? Yeah def.
does Harvard university being one of a kind contribute to Harvard Business School being extremely reputable and vis versa and because of all of that, money and influence and best applicants come to it? Yes obviously

I’m an international candidate planning to apply in the fall. Ultimately a degree from the M7 in the US will still unlock job opps around the world in ways that INSEAD/ LBS won’t necessarily

like

But can’t they get that from places like
LBS, bocconi, insead? Is there that much of a pay difference coming out?

likefunny

Pretty significant pay difference. But mostly if you want to work in the US, you should get an MBA in the US. Prestige-wise, even the top international MBA programs are not that well-known in the US (even the INSEADs and LBSs)

Everyone obsesses over the US, plain and simple. The whole world hates us, yet they’ll flock to us at any chance they get.

like

The network, brand recognition, and OCR opportunities at top US programs are simply unparalleled. Some firms also only recruit at top US schools. For instance, McKinsey Greater China (mainland + HK + TW) gave out 9 internship offers for summer 2020, and all 9 incoming interns are at T15 programs in the US.

$$$ better jobs prestige the higher ceiling for advancement

If the MBA is stem accredited they get three years to work here, that’s 3- 4 chances to get picked in the H1B lottery by an employer, which can give you the right work. While it’s difficult, for international students from countries that don’t have long greencard wait lists it can present a real path to staying
