Are you sure your LI acquaintance has been a SM for 12 years, or do they just have their latest title listed with total tenure at the firm? That's a pretty common practice.

Senior Managers can make total comp anywhere from $180k - $300k. Base is usually $180k-$250k plus bonus/sales etc.
Rising Star
Depends on the service line and raise history. For example, audit and some tax make noticeable less then other practices.
Was above that my first year as SM, but had colleagues below that number. We had same starting salary, but I'd hit a couple big performance based raises, and also loved in HCOL.
Rising Star
Usually up or out, but trying to find another option for more technical roles
Depends on practice range can be between 300-400. Yes there’s up and out 12 years sounds long
At EY, SM is the last non-Partner level (since MD is considered a parallel track instead of a step on the path to Partner). So typical tenure in the SM level is 4-7 years for people who might still be in the pipeline for Partner.
200k is likely a first year SM salary (for HCOL area).
Because Glassdoor is completely unreliable?
SMs have 6-10 years to make it to PPMD although Tech has a technical SM path, so that maybe your friend. Other than that Technical path, it is absolutely up or out.
I make $158 as an M4 with expectations of making SM this year. How will I get up to 180k+ in my first year. Doesn’t seem like that will happen. Or maybe?
Thanks for that insight. I figure the % raises would slow down at SM. Is this true?
My first year as SM was $175k
I left 6 years later in the low $200s with 16 years experience. Raises and bonuses were truly sad
The bigger numbers are in TAS / EYP - Advisory, Risk, Audit are lower
And they’ll let you sit at SM forever as long as you’re billable, unless they restructure your group or some other external force occurs. I know people in my old group at 11+ years at level.
I hear you. I wouldn’t mind making a good salary with top notch WLB. Thanks for sharing.
