My uber account worked seamlessly in India - it has a US issued card on it.
I was able to get PhonePe set up with HDFC Nro/Nre account and a US cellphone. Used it without issue.
I've been told ICICI also supports US numbers.
Couldn't get Gpay to work - but PhonePe seemed incredibly user friendly and got set up with absolutely no issue.
Good luck and safe travels
Confirming my Uber with international CC worked just fine in Delhi.
You can use your debit cards for uber/ola.
Some of the local stuff you can use cash. Cards work at most restaurants but might be easier to have an indian debit card.
I am in India right now. I am using Phonepe with NRO account. Have not used cash at all
Best would be if u have an Indian bank account and able to setup UPI. If so even a street vendors take digital payments via UPI.
My uber account with US CC worked. I learnt from another post in the same bowl that you can register with US number for UPI payments using gpay, paytm, phonePe. If thats the case, its a game changer for NRIs. We can make cashless transactions to everyone (including every street vendor) just like how people living in India do. Worth exploring that option OP.
MD1 - can you share more details on how to set this up? No Indian/NRx bank accounts. Just US ones. Is it still possible to set up UPI, PayTM etc? TIA!
Thank goodness at least Uber will work with my US card. Thank you all for confirming. I don’t have a bank account in India so I guess I’ll have to rely on using cash/ my cc.
Any guidance on getting an eSim? I’ll be in Bombay - is Airtel the best?
I used no FX fee card in Uber, so you might want to check that once.
Ariel eSIM is easy and best. Just go to a shop, they can set it up for you in 10-15 mins. Carry Aadhar card.
