My friends who work at the state make way less than I do but pay way less for health insurance. They also never work more than 40 hours a week.
You also work with extremely lazy people as coworkers who have no ambition other than to clock out at 5 pm every day.
You'll have less opportunity.
I think it just depends on your career goals and personal goals
If you end up wanting to leave then it might not look good that you spend such little time at each
Government will never pay well.
Working for the state sounds so boring
I wouldn’t go govt as a young buck. I made that mistake starting out with the Feds and took a pay cut to get out.
Probably have that sweet government employee pension though
It can make you indifferent and lazy if you are there long enough. Benefits are great, but you'll never get rich.
If you have high student loans and value work life balance, I would consider it
@AA1, No. don’t consider it. No movement, pay is poor, you’ll be a union employee, susceptible to govt shutdowns, etc
Since the first thing you mentioned was money, and not work life balance, I’d suggest you stay where you are. WLB is possible in PA, and if I may say so, at RSM. Been here a long time, have a family, and lots of flexibility. You have to ASK for it - Let’s face it, if you want to work 60 hours a week, the firm will let you. But the maxed out PTO accrual helps, as well as having regular, healthy discussions with your CA about your career goals. If you don’t like your CA, or don’t feel like you’re on the same page, it’s okay to ask HR for a new one. Good luck!
I’ve done that job.
Don’t
Stay
Did this right out of college. Very limited growth potential. Boring/not enough work. No incentive to perform well. I don't recommend it.
Maxed out pto accrual? What’s that
Thanks everyone for the tip.
@RSM5 not sure if you’re serious but basically if you don’t take PTO you’ll eventually stop accruing. Varies by level I think. So, it’s ‘forced’ vacation time for those that feel so busy they can’t take time off or pressured not to. Helps the work-life balance. However, I can’t stress the importance of not letting things get to that point! TAKE PTO
