Kids? Family? Current net worth?

If no major risks, I would take it in a heartbeat. Seems like a golden opportunity.

like

No kids. Spouse works with a private equity firm, so no financial concerns given we are just touching 30.

I had always thought of becoming partner at the firm but losing that motivation every now and then.

like

How much are you making as an engagement manager to turn down a 500k offer? I mean, that’s like dream level comp for a lot of people. Genuinely curious

like

Lol agreed. That’s double what I make now and I’m 5 years into consulting post MBA. $500k is enough that even if it’s a disaster you could quit and take a year off and still have more savings than most ppl make in several years

Sounds pretty awesome. Just vet it out to ensure that Chief of Staff is substantial (sounds like it is!). Sometimes Chief of Staff jobs can be more like executive assistant positions with no real trajectory. Make sure you have significant projects and responsibilities. I would also ask what the path to Chief Strategy Officer entails. Is this guaranteed provided you hit certain goals? What does that review and assessment look like? Who else would be considered for the job?

likehelpful

All kidding aside, it sounds like a great opportunity. It sounds corny but it’s time to do a pros and cons list to get all of your thoughts down on a page.

like

Sounds awesome.

I'd jump if the company is good

like

You can always boomerang, no?

Just make sure the job responsibilities match that of Leo McGarry and not Debbie Fiderer.

like

Holy sh** take it take it take it. Hell, I’d take it if you don’t want it.

I’m a soon to be “manager.” I can haz job please?

Thanks everyone. I have decided to take up the offer. 😃

What’s preventing them from giving you CSO title right now? I only ask because chief of staff means very different things depending on the firm.

Judging from your title you’re MBB? If it’s a smaller startup you should have merit for the CSO from the start.

like

They have become pretty big in the recent past after their Series B round.

Founders are not looking to get a CSO at this stage

like

If you take it and get yourself some equity, so can shepherd the company to a buyout and make dummy money.

Make it a 2-3 year play and if it's going well, try to get gobbled up by a bigger player or an IPO.

like

Yeah bro just get an IPO

likefunny

A few questions I’ll look to clarify:
1. If you don’t make CSO, what are the other possible career paths based on their growth trajectory and their vision?
2. Is there a possibility of a sale? If yes, what would that mean for you?

On the side, does the role report into the CEO? If yes, then I’ll be looking to get these answers directly from him/her before coming on board.

like

Great opp and consulting exit. Don’t see a long term play at MBB if I were you. Fintech is a great space with plenty of upside still.

Having said that, this is still high risk. I would really vet their balance sheet and make sure it has runway for at least 18-24 months w/o new funding. Also I would do a quick analysis on where they are vs competition.

likehelpful

Just be careful with the Chief of Staff role responsibilities, as in many companies it is essentially the Chief Firefighter, and thus you’d be aligning to an assistant to the CEO or COO

like

Try and meet as many people from the team/company as you can.

Culture and people will be huge to whether you like it.

like

I did that today and felt pretty excited.

smart

Can you do a mini-AMA on your background? MBA? Years as EM?

Impressive offer — congrats!

like

Sure, in sometime soon.

like

Why are you asking this app? Ask your friends and family. You seem status obsessed

like

Always interesting to see how jealousy and hate manifests itself. 🤦🏾‍♂️

GL OP!

like

... thinking further about it, if the role reports to the CEO, aren’t you already serving in a CSOish role? Why don’t they just make it official - maybe change title but same base and higher potential for bonus? Just thinking aloud

Would be talking to them tomorrow. Let's see.

Can anyone tell me if there are Customer Success Managers, etc positions that manage customers post sale and have a similar range base as me with commission plans? Question for paid search experts who have big agency experienc (e.g. big 4, dentsu, etc.) - is it considered standard to use SKAG instead of STAG, and use alpha/beta structures?...even with the changes Google has made to phrase and exact match? The various agencies I've worked at (small agencies) never use that method.

If you were interviewing someone from a small agency and they said they didn't use those types of account structures, would you think they were inexperienced?
