A lot of times government jobs have fairly strict salary bands. But even within those bands there can be some flexibility. And you're not stuck with what they offer. Tell them you were hoping for more and try to negotiate, and if it doesn't work, you don't need to take the job.
Coach
Government unabashedly pays lower than the private sector, what you make today will have no bearing on the discussion. You will fall somewhere in their band based on your qualifications.

I agree with IBM1. You can definitely try to negotiate but it doesn't mean they will pay you more. They seem to kind of stick with the first offer they give you at that level.
State and federal jobs often have lower salary over private sector but where they shine is often they will come with a 401k, pension, & an annuity that grossly outweighs the salary difference. That and up until this current administration a government job was a secure job until an early retirement... They weren't referred to as hack jobs for no reason... That being said you have to weigh in where you are in life and if short term finances or lond term retirement is your priority.
