Got called for an interview with a state agency, but wondering about salary negotiation. My current salary is higher than their posted range. Do state employers ever make exceptions, or am I stuck with whatever they offer?

A lot of times government jobs have fairly strict salary bands. But even within those bands there can be some flexibility. And you're not stuck with what they offer. Tell them you were hoping for more and try to negotiate, and if it doesn't work, you don't need to take the job.

like

Government unabashedly pays lower than the private sector, what you make today will have no bearing on the discussion. You will fall somewhere in their band based on your qualifications.

like

Maybe you’re over qualified at this point. But you can try

like

I agree with IBM1. You can definitely try to negotiate but it doesn't mean they will pay you more. They seem to kind of stick with the first offer they give you at that level.

State and federal jobs often have lower salary over private sector but where they shine is often they will come with a 401k, pension, & an annuity that grossly outweighs the salary difference. That and up until this current administration a government job was a secure job until an early retirement... They weren't referred to as hack jobs for no reason... That being said you have to weigh in where you are in life and if short term finances or lond term retirement is your priority.

Tell them what you make

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.

I’m interviewing for a start up and the role sounds interesting. Usually for the “test” part of the interview I’ve had to analyze data. This company wants me to develop a growth strategy that outlines key initiatives for growth, different opportunities, experiments I’d run, KPIs, and working cross-functionally.

Is this a lot for an interview?

I’m a little afraid of doing all this work to then just have them take my ideas and not hire me.

If you opt to share the feedback with the manager, would the manager have a legal case against the company or former employee?

If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
