Got my dream job offer, but debating on taking it due to significantly worse work/life balance. But pay is 2x current salary. Planning to start a family in 1-2 yrs. I want to talk to my manager (cont)

Take the "dream job" hands down!
You can always resign and go back to Big 4 or industry.
You can gain a lot from a high-burn job and you can hoard a lot of money early.
Do it, and drive forward!

like

@EY1 We're in a group/office where it's a lot of local projects. Leadership values the work life balance so we leave the client site at ~6 most nights. The offer is at a top private equity firm

like

From consulting to PE, dream story. What did it take for you to get to where you are, was it just network?

like

Sounds like in two years you can come back to consulting if the balance is better

like

Surprising to hear that you'd move to consulting for work life balance. Is the offer at a competitor?

like

TAKE IT LOSE FAMILY

like

And ask what he thinks about taking it vs staying. He switched to EY a few years ago due to starting a family and wanting the work life balance. But I'm worried that he will tell leadership that I'm debating leaving. We are pretty close (he's been an awesome mentor to me). Is it a terrible idea to ask his opinion?

like

@IBM1. I previously worked in PE and investment banking, so it's more of bouncing back

like

Yeah work 2 years there then start the family

like

How'd you get the job? Congrats BTW!

like

I would definitely ask mentors for advice, but that may or may not include your current manager. Might also be helpful to talk to friends that have already left EY for a more balanced perspective

like

Ah. That makes sense. That's awesome. Super jealous. I've been trying to get into IB since the day I took my first Valuation class. Props to you for having worked all through school. As far as advice goes, nothing wrong in asking a mentor...you've worked in the industry before so you know how it is. PE is coveted for a reason, combine that with a couple Consulting years and you'll be in a much better position both financially and professionally. Take the offer, crush it for 2 years, save the cash and then move on to whatever your heart desires. Regret beats fear. If there's a time to dedicate your life to work, it's now...in a few years you may look back wishing you had taken the position and will no longer even be able to consider it a possibility. That's a regret I personally would have a hard time living with.

like

A1 - thank you! My two cents is that if you're trying to break into IB the easiest way is to join a small boutique shop. If you network enough they'll give you a shot given you're a consultant and smart/teachable. From there you stick it out for 2 years to get the modeling experience and then can move on to BB IB/PE/VC/HF. Best of luck to you!

@BCG1 - $50-100B AUM. There's only a few in that range so I'm not giving exacts

like

Thank you for the advice EY! Best of luck to you as well. I'm sure you'll be successful in whichever endeavor you choose

like

Damn, sounds like a great exit OP. Take it at don't look baxk

like

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! But back to my question haha - bad idea to ask for Managers advice? Has anyone had experience with that?

Agree to ask manager. I've counseled coachees to pursue these types of opportunities for selfish reasons: build my external network both for me business or for exit strategy.

Op..did you work in M&A at EY?

I interviewed for KPMG on 11/15 for a Senior role and the HR emailed me on 11/16 that everyone liked me but they think I should be hired as an Experienced Associate. I had a call with the HR on 11/17 wherein we discussed about my salary expectations and the HR said he will get back in a day. It’s been more than 10 days and multiple follow ups but still no response. I don’t think I was rude while talking to the HR, I just told my current salary and asked for min. that no. Did i miss the chance ?

Received an offer for non- tech CCM role and wondering if I should accept. I feel like I was lowballed and downleved despite having 6 YOE (relevant but not in tech). Not sure it will be beneficial to leave my current role for this offer to get my foot in the door.

I’m at the cap for salary at the level/role and can’t negotiate offer any higher.

PwC A recruiter from PWC reached out to me to ask if I’d consider a different office the one I applied to, since it’s full. It would be Boston, Hartford, Chicago, Minneapolis, Little Rock, Denver, San Francisco or San Jose. MSA candidate. Is there a fully remote option? Do you have to be in the office all the time? Is the compensation high at PWC? Is there a possible moving expenses? Any insight or advice would help me make a decision. Thank you!

I'm sick to the stomach and very anxious, stressed at the suddenness of the thrust.

I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot.
